Bank Of Alexandria (Alexandria, Virginia)
The Bank of Alexandria is a historic bank building located at Alexandria, Virginia, United States. It was built in 1807, and consists of a three-story main block, with a two-story east wing. The main block is five bays wide and 7 bays deep. In 1848, James Green purchased the building and turned it into a hotel, then in 1855, he expanded it across the lawn of the Carlyle House next door, tripling the size of the Mansion House Hotel. The hotel was used as a hospital during the Civil War. Carlyle House
Carlyle House is a historic mansion in Alexandria, Virginia, United States, built by Scottish merchant John Carlyle in 1751 to 1752 in the Georgian style. It is situated in the city's Old Town at 121 North Fairfax Street between Cameron and King Street. To the west, the Gadsby's Tavern is found one block away and Christ Church is three blocks away. To the south, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop is located three blocks away. To the east, Torpedo Factory Art Center and the Alexandria Archaeology Museum are located two blocks away. Mansion House Hospital was a Union hospital during the American Civil War, formed after Union occupation of Alexandria, Virginia and the seizure of the Mansion House Hotel. History Mansion House Hotel The hospital was built in the old Mansion House Hotel, an establishment also known as Green's Hotel operated by furniture manufacturer James Green. In 1848, Green acquired the former Bank of Alexandria building and converted it into a hotel. In 1855, a four-story addition on the building's east side was built, in front of the Carlyle House mansion. This made it the largest hotel in Alexandria. Green received a notice in early November 1861, stating he had three days to vacate the hotel. Military hospital On December 1, 1861, Mansion House Hospital was opened as a General Hospital.
