Bangladesh National Philatelic Association
The Bangladesh National Philatelic Association is a non-profit philatelic organisation in Bangladesh established in 1978. It has over one thousand members and is run by an executive panel of twelve members. It has issued more than one hundred philatelic publications since formation. BNPA arranges national and regional philatelic exhibitions and holds monthly auctions in the capital Dhaka. The membership fee is 200 TK year (general member) or 2500 TK (Life member). BNPA is arranging Philatelic get together cum Auction on 1st and 3rd Friday of every months. Philatelic
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the previous six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than ''timbromanie'' (roughly "stamp quest"), which was disliked.Williams, L.N. & M. Philatelic Exhibition
A philatelic exhibition is an exhibition of Philately, stamps and postal history where stamp collectors (philatelists) compete for medals. The displays are shown in glass frames, and the exhibition is normally accompanied by stamp dealer Exchange (organized market), bourses and post office stands where stamps and other philatelic items may be purchased. Many philatelic exhibitions are regular events, held annually or at some other frequency and they are important events in the philatelic calendar. Postage Stamps And Postal History Of Bangladesh
Bangladesh first issued its own postage stamps upon gaining independence in 1971. A set of eight stamps, with various motifs including a map of the country, were issued. Shortly after, stamps in eight values were overprinted "Bangladesh Liberated" in both English and Bengali were prepared in the United Kingdom, but only three values were issued in Bangladesh. Overprints While the initial stamps were being produced, local postmasters were authorised to overprint the Pakistani stamps that they had in stock with the name of their new country. This practice led to a large number of varieties, not catalogued in the major stamp catalogues. These issues ceased to be valid in 1973. First stamps The first stamps of the country were issued in rupees (1 rupee = 100 paisa) on 29 July 1971, but in 1972 a new currency was introduced (1 taka = 100 poisha) and since then all stamps have been inscribed with taka or poisha values.
