Bang The Drum (album)
''Bang the Drum'' is the fifth studio album by South African Afropop band Mango Groove. Released in September 2009, it was the band's first studio album since '' Eat a Mango'' in 1995. Songs Lead singer Claire Johnston told an interviewer that the band wanted to produce "a 'roots' album… infused with… contemporary influences". Two of the songs, she said, represent two aspects of Mango Groove: "Hey" has the "fun, pennywhistle party sound", and "Belong" (a song about being South African) shows a "more introspective side". One album track, "My Blue Ocean", had four completely different incarnations before the band chose the version to release. Johnston described the version that made the cut as "simple, ambient, ndheartfelt". "Before that it was tablas, choirs, rock guitars, Mongolian chants, Peter Gabriel synth samples and so on," she said. Mango Groove
Mango Groove is an 11-piece South African Afropop band whose music fuses pop and township music—especially marabi and kwela. Since their foundation in 1984, the band has released six studio albums and numerous singles. Their most recent album, 2016's ''Faces to the Sun'', was more than four years in the making. History Formation Mango Groove formed in Johannesburg in 1984. Three of the four founding members—John Leyden, Andy Craggs, and Bertrand Mouton—were bandmates in a "white middle-class punk band" called Pett Frog, while they were students at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1984 the three young men met kwela musician "Big Voice" Jack Lerole at the Gallo Records building in Johannesburg. Boksburg
Boksburg is a city on the East Rand of Gauteng province of South Africa. Gold was discovered in Boksburg in 1887. Boksburg was named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, W. Eduard Bok. The Main Reef Road linked Boksburg to all the other major mining towns on the Witwatersrand and the Angelo Hotel (1887) was used as a staging post. Boksburg is part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, that forms the local government of most of the East Rand. The Mining Commissioner Montague White built a large dam which, empty for years, was dubbed White's Folly until a flash flood in 1889 silenced detractors. Emmarentia Dam is a dam in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, South Africa. There are several dams that make up Emmarentia Dam, despite its allusion to the singular, with two small dams found upstream in the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. History The Emmarentia Dam lies on land that once made up the Braamfontein Farm, one of many large farms that make what is Johannesburg and its suburbs. The land was bought in 1886 by Lourens Geldenhuys for its mining rights as it was hoped that the Confidence Reef would extend into his farm but it did not. The land remained as a farm and by 1891 it was divided between his son's Frans and Louw where the brothers had already built two farm houses, still in existence, close to where the dam is today. Gqeberha (), formerly Port Elizabeth and colloquially often referred to as P.E., is a major seaport and the most populous city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
