Banda Ionica
Banda Ionica is an Italian folk group focused on the brass band traditions of Sicily. The roots of the music played by the band can be traced to Holy Week and funeral marches. The banda tradition, updated by Banda Ionica and others, helped to bring the operatic and classical music to the rural poor. Founded in 1997 by Fabio Barovero (formerly of the group Mau Mau) and Roy Paci, the group is currently composed of twenty young musicians and plays a mix of traditional and original compositions. Folk Music
Folk music is a music genre that includes traditional folk music and the contemporary genre that evolved from the former during the 20th-century folk revival. Roy Paci
Rosario (Roy) Paci (born September 16, 1969 in Augusta) is an Italian trumpeter, singer, composer and arranger. Music and career Born in Sicily, Paci started playing the piano as a young child and picked up the trumpet at age 10. By 13, he was playing with traditional Sicilian jazz and performing in some of Italy's most famous clubs. Paci moved to South America in 1990 where he traveled to play cumbia and popular music in Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. Further trips to the Canary Islands and Senegal helped him to train and develop his musical influences. These travels set Paci on the path that would lead him into a series of collaborations and tours involving music projects, film, television and political causes, including relief efforts in Africa and Amnesty International's campaign against violence on women. Folk Music Of Italy
Italian folk music has a deep and complex history. National unification came quite late to the Italian peninsula, so its many hundreds of separate cultures remained un-homogenized until quite recently. Moreover, Italian folk music reflects Italy's geographic position at the south of Europe and in the center of the Mediterranean Sea: Celtic, Slavic, Arabic, Greek, Spanish and Byzantine influences are readily apparent in the musical styles of the Italian regions. Holy Week
Holy Week ( la, Hebdomada Sancta or , ; grc, Ἁγία καὶ Μεγάλη Ἑβδομάς, translit=Hagia kai Megale Hebdomas, lit=Holy and Great Week) is the most sacred week in the liturgical year in Christianity. In Eastern Churches, which includes Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Catholic and Eastern Lutheran traditions, Holy Week occurs the week after Lazarus Saturday and starts on the evening of Palm Sunday. Banda (opera)
In opera, a ''banda'' (Italian for ''band'') refers to a musical ensemble (normally of wind instruments) which is used in addition to the main orchestra and plays the music which is actually heard by the characters in the opera. A ''banda sul palco'' (band on the stage) was prominently used in Rossini's Neapolitan operas. Verdi used the term ''banda'' to refer to a ''banda sul palco'', as in the score for ''Rigoletto''. He used the term ''banda interna'' (internal band), to refer to a band which is still separate from the orchestra but heard from the off-stage wings. Mau Mau (band)
Mau Mau is an Italian band from Turin,Young, 2002. p.31 formed in 1990 by Luca Morino (vocals and guitar), Fabio Barovero (accordion) and Tatè Nsongan (Djembe). Born from the ashes of the underground cult group Loschi Dezi, the band draws its influences from world music, especially Mediterranean, African, Arabic and Latin traditions.Chamberland, 2001. pp.198-204 They mainly sing in native Piedmontese. Davide Ferrario (born 26 June 1956) is an Italian film director, screenwriter and author. Life and career Born in Casalmaggiore, Cremona, Ferrario graduated in Anglo-American literature, then he began to work in film distribution, and he contributed to import in Italy many indie films by John Sayles, Jim Jarmusch, Susan Seidelman, Godfrey Reggio. He also collaborated as a film critic with the cinema magazine ''Cineforum'', and he wrote a monograph about Rainer Werner Fassbinder. After collaborating to several screenplays, Ferrario made his directorial debut in 1987 with the short film ''Non date da mangiare agli animali'', and in 1989 he directed his first feature film, the neo-noir The End of the Night.
