Balthazar (1937 Film)
''Balthazar'' is a 1937 French comedy film directed by Pierre Colombier and starring Jules Berry, Danièle Parola and André Alerme. It was based on the play of the same title by Léopold Marchand.Goble p.306 It was shot at the Joinville Studios of Pathé in Paris. The film's sets were designed by the art director Jacques Colombier. Synopsis On the coast of Provence Germaine Philippe knocks down a man and then assists him. Soon afterwards the stranger is revealed to be the eccentric millionaire Balthazar Lemonnier who then purchases an island just across the villa where she lives with her husband. Everyone in the area tries to ingratiate themselves with the wealthy newcomer. However a rumour spreads that he is in fact a lunatic. Paul Fournier (26 November 1853, Calais – 14 May 1935, Paris) was a French legal historian. He was a member of the Institut de France. Biography Born in Calais, Paul Fournier obtained a law degree before studying the history of institutions at the École Nationale des Chartes, of which he was graduated in 1879 with a thesis on ''Officialités au Moyen Âge'' (Paris, 1880). Agrégé in 1881, he was appointed professor or Roman law at the University of Grenoble where he would stay thirty three years, becoming dean of the faculty in 1904. He was appointed to the University of Paris in 1914. In 1911 he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. He is best known as a specialist in canon law. Louis Alfred Doumet, known by his stage name of Doumel, (born 2 December 1889 in Marseille; died 23 May 1954 in Reillanne) was a French actor and comedian active in the inter-war years. Biography Having moved to Paris thanks to the passion for the southern style, which flowered at the time with operettas and films on the subject, Doumel started to appear in small music halls and theatres, entertaining audiences with comic stories from Marseille, where he met other actors such as Gorlett and Rellys. Louis Doumel also appeared in various operettas and plays and recorded some discs of tall stories and Marseille jokes. He appeared in his first film in 1926 and continued making films until the Second World War. Lunatic
Lunatic is an antiquated term referring to a person who is seen as mentally ill, dangerous, foolish, or crazy—conditions once attributed to "lunacy". The word derives from ''lunaticus'' meaning "of the moon" or "moonstruck". History The term "lunatic" derives from the Latin word ''lunaticus'', which originally referred mainly to epilepsy and madness, as diseases thought to be caused by the moon. The King James Version of the Bible records "lunatick" in the Gospel of Matthew, which has been interpreted as a reference to epilepsy. By the fourth and fifth centuries, astrologers were commonly using the term to refer to neurological and psychiatric diseases. Pliny the Elder argued that the full moon induced individuals to lunacy and epilepsy by effects on the brain analogous to the nocturnal dew. Villa
A villa is a type of house that was originally an ancient Roman upper class country house. Since its origins in the Roman villa, the idea and function of a villa have evolved considerably.
