Ballyhaunis
Ballyhaunis () is a town in County Mayo, Ireland. It is at the crossroads of the N60 and N83 National secondary roads and on the railway line linking Dublin to Westport and Ballina. It is thought that the town grew up around St Mary's Augustinian Friary (popularly referred to as "the Abbey"), which was founded in 1348, according to local tradition. The town and its hinterland contain a number of megalithic monuments. According to the 2016 Census, Ballyhaunis had a population of 2,312. Non-Irish nationals made up 42% of the population, which is much higher than the national average of and is the highest of any town in Ireland. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Mayo Senior Hurling Championship
The Mayo Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested since 1923 by the top Mayo GAA clubs. Tooreen are the current (2022) title holders, defeating Ballyhaunis in the final. Presently the competition has four teams: Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar & Westport. Ballina and Belmullet no longer compete. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the TJ Tyrrell Cup. The winners of the Mayo Senior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship. Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship
The Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship was an annual hurling tournament played between the senior hurling clubs in Connacht contested from 1970 until 2007 when it was discontinued due to a lack of meaningful opposition for the Galway champions. The Galway champions now qualify directly for the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship semi-final. Throughout the competition's existence the Galway champions automatically qualified for the final. In 2007, the competition's final year, this competition was won by Portumna from Galway. Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship
The Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship is an annual club competition in Connacht. Prior to 2008, county champions competed in the senior grade, but since then the senior champions from Mayo and Roscommon compete at intermediate level along with the Galway intermediate champions, who receive a bye to the final. The winners go on to compete for the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship. Beginning with the 2018 championship, the London champions compete in the competition, entering at the semi-final stage. The competition has been won by the Galway representatives on each occasion, with the exception of Mayo club Tooreen's wins in 2017, 2019 & 2021. Keith Higgins
Keith Higgins ( ga, Ceiteach Ó hUiginn) is an Irish sportsperson. He has played both Gaelic football and hurling for Mayo GAA, the former until his retirement in January 2021. He also plays both sports for his club Ballyhaunis. In 2006, he was the All Stars Young Footballer of the Year. He also captained both the Mayo under-21 football and hurling teams to All-Ireland Championships. Injury ruled him out of the 2007 championship. Higgins also represented Mayo at senior level in both codes, played for Connacht in hurling's Railway Cup, winning a medal in 2005, while in 2014 he became the first Connacht player to win football and hurling Railway Cups after Connacht won a first title since 1968.
