Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. The association also promotes Irish music and dance, as well as the Irish language. County Down
County Down () is one of the six counties of Northern Ireland, one of the nine counties of Ulster and one of the traditional thirty-two counties of Ireland. It covers an area of and has a population of 531,665. It borders County Antrim to the north, the Irish Sea to the east, County Armagh to the west, and County Louth across Carlingford Lough to the southwest. In the east of the county is Strangford Lough and the Ards Peninsula. The largest town is Bangor, on the northeast coast. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Down Senior Hurling Championship
The Down Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Morgan Fuels Down GAA Senior Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Down SHC) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Down GAA clubs. The Down County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1903. Ballycran are the title holders (2021) defeating Portaferry in the Final after extra time. History Faugh-a-Ballagh won the inaugural Down SHC in 1903. The competition has been won by 10 teams, 9 of which have won it more than once. Ballycran is the most successful team in the tournament's history, having won it 27 times. No team outside Ballycran, Portaferry and Ballygalget have won the title since Kilclief's 23rd victory in 1956. Ulster Senior Club Hurling Championship
The Ulster Senior Club Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the AIB Ulster GAA Hurling Senior Club Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Ulster GAA, Ulster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the champion hurling teams in the province of Ulster in Ireland. It is the most prestigious club competition in Ulster hurling. Introduced in 1970-71 All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship#Ulster Senior Club Hurling Championship, 1970, it was initially a straight knockout tournament open to the nine county club champion teams in Ulster. The competition currently retains the knockout format but features just four teams who represent the strongest hurling counties in Ulster. Gabriel Clarke (hurler)
Gabriel Clarke (born 1981 in Ballygalget, County Down) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Ballygalget and has been a member of the Down senior inter-county team since 2000. Playing career Club Clarke plays his hurling with his local club in Ballygalget and has enjoyed much success. He first came to prominence in the late 1990s when the club captured three county senior championship titles in-a-row between 1997 and 1999. After a period out of the limelight Ballygalget returned in 2003 with Clarke collecting another county winners' medal. It was the first of another three-in-a-row for Ballygalget and for Clarke. The third of these victories was subsequently converted into an Ulster club title following a defeat of Cushendall. Graham Clarke (hurler)
Graham Clarke (born 27 March 1974 in Ballygalget, County Down) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Ballygalget and was a member of the Down senior inter-county team from 1993 to 2012. Playing career Club Clarke plays his hurling with his local club in Ballygalget, and first came to prominence on the club’s minor team in the late 1980s. He was goalkeeper on the team that captured four consecutive county championship titles in that grade. Clarke later joined the club’s senior team and became the first-choice goalkeeper at the age of sixteen. He won his first county senior championship winners’ medal in 1990, following a defeat of Ballycran. Danny Toner
Daniel Toner (born 1992) is a hurling player who plays as a midfielder for the Down senior team. Born in the Ards Peninsula, Toner first played competitive hurling at juvenile and underage levels with the Ballygalget club. He subsequently won four county championship medals with the club's senior team. Toner made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was selected for the Down minor team in 2008. He played for three championship seasons with the minor team, before later joining the Down under-21 team. Toner made his senior debut during the 2011 league, winning a Christy Ring Cup medal in 2013. Gareth Johnson (born in Ballygalget, County Down) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Ballygalget and football for Loughinisland and has been a member of the Down senior inter-county hurling and football teams. Johnson scored an injury-time goal in the 2013 Christy Ring Cup final to win it for Down for the first time in a 3-16 to 2-17 victory against Kerry.
