The 'Ballarat Fire Station' is an historic fire station in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia which was opened in 1856. On the morning of 7 December 1859 a large fire destroyed twenty-one hotels, stores and dwellings, a large number of outhouses and property in the city in less than an hour. By 1891 the Ballarat city volunteer brigade was acknowledged as being one of the best in Australia. At this time it consisted of 15 active working members scattered all over the city who were governed by six officers and a paid station-keeper, residing on the premises. Ballarat East Fire Station
The Ballarat East Fire Station, in Ballarat East, Victoria, Australia is the oldest continually operating fire station in the Southern Hemisphere. The tower was designed by local architect Henry Caselli and was built in 1864 by William Cowland, a builder and fire brigade volunteer. Caselli's design for an Engine House was not built; an 1858-built structure was used. The Engine House was replaced by a new one in 1916. Ballarat East is a suburb of Ballarat in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. From 1857 until 1921 the suburb had its own council (see below). The suburb covers a large area east of the city centre. It is the oldest urban area in Ballarat and was the site of many goldmines, as well as of the Eureka Rebellion.
