Charles Ballantyne
Charles Colquhoun Ballantyne, (August 9, 1867 – October 19, 1950) was a Canadian politician. A millionaire and one-time owner of Sherwin Williams Paints in Montreal, Ballantyne was president of the Canadian Manufacturer's Association and a member of the Montreal Harbour Board. He also raised and commanded the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards of Canada. He was appointed to Sir Robert Borden's World War I Union government. He held no parliamentary seat when Borden appointed him minister of public works, minister of marine and fisheries and minister of the naval service in October 1917. He became a Cabinet minister prior to being elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the December 1917 federal election; delayed for two weeks because of the Halifax Explosion. Robert Michael Ballantyne
Robert Michael Ballantyne (24 April 1825 – 8 February 1894) was a Scottish author of juvenile fiction, who wrote more than a hundred books. He was also an accomplished artist: he exhibited some of his water-colours at the Royal Scottish Academy. Early life Ballantyne was born in Edinburgh on 24 April 1825, the ninth of ten children and the youngest son, to Alexander Thomson Ballantyne (1776–1847) and his wife Anne (1786–1855). Alexander was a newspaper editor and printer in the family firm of "Ballantyne & Co" based at Paul's Works on the Canongate, and Robert's uncle James Ballantyne (1772–1833) was the printer for Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. In 1832-33 the family is known to have been living at 20 Fettes Row, in the northern New Town of Edinburgh. A UK-wide banking crisis in 1825 resulted in the collapse of the Ballantyne printing business the following year with debts of £130,000, which led to a decline in the family's fortunes. Richard Ballantyne
Richard Ballantyne (August 26, 1817 – November 8, 1898) was the founder of the Sunday School of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having begun the program in December 1849. He was also a Mormon pioneer and missionary. Ballantyne was born in Whitridgebog, Roxburghshire, Scotland, where he was a Sunday school teacher in the Relief Presbyterian Church. In December 1842, Ballantyne became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, being baptized in the Firth of Forth at Leith. In 1843 he and a number of his family members emigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois, where the majority of the Latter Day Saints were gathering. On February 17, 1847, Ballantyne married Hulda Meriah Clark, and they emigrated to Utah Territory in 1848 with the Mormon pioneers. Paul Ballantyne (July 18, 1909 – July 26, 1996) was an American actor. Early years Ballantyne was born on July 18, 1909 in Moorhead, Iowa, His parents were James Carl Ballantyne and Inez Mae Adams. He attended high school in Lamoni, Iowa. He attended Sherwood Music School, from which he received his teaching certificate in 1931. He studied acting under Luella Canterbury in Chicago and served an apprenticeship under Eva Le Gallienne. Michael Ballantyne
Michael Alan Ballantyne (February 27, 1945 – June 19, 2008) was a Canadian politician and humanitarian. He was a city councillor for Yellowknife City Council from 1978 and in 1979 became mayor until his resignation in 1983. He served as a Member and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1983 to 1995. Ballantyne was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1983 Northwest Territories general election, winning the Yellowknife North electoral district. He was re-elected to a second term in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election. He was re-elected to his third and final term in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. Ballantyne was elected Speaker of the Assembly on November 13, 1991 and served in that position until November 10, 1993. He retired at the end of his term when the Legislature dissolved in 1995. Ken Ballantyne (15 October 1940 – 10 November 2016) was a Scottish athlete who specialised in the mile. He represented Scotland in international competition between 1961 and 1966. Athletics Ballantyne was born in India and educated at Blairmore School and Strathallan School in Scotland. Whilst at Strathallan he won the Scottish Schools Championship mile in 1958. In 1959 he won the Scottish junior mile beating the previous record by 5 seconds. He became a trainee manager with the Commercial Union insurance company in Edinburgh and joined Edinburgh Southern Harriers athletics club. Joyce Ballantyne (April 4, 1918 – May 15, 2006) was a painter of pin-up art. She is best known as the designer of the Coppertone girl, whose swimming costume is being pulled down by a dog. Early life and career She was born in Norfolk, Nebraska during World War I, and grew up in Omaha. She attended the University of Nebraska for two years and then transferred to the Art Institute of Chicago to study commercial art and the American Academy of Art. After two years at the Art Institute, Ballantyne joined Kling Studios, where she painted Rand McNally maps and illustrated books for Cameo Press. She then moved to the Stevens-Gross Studio, where she remained for more than a decade. While at the studio, she became part of a group of artists that included Gil Elvgren, Al Moore, and Al Buell.
