Ballad For One Gun
''Ballad for One Gun'' is a 1963 Australian television film about Ned Kelly broadcast on ABC. It was originally aired 17 July 1963 in Sydney and shown at later dates in other parts of Australia. It was written by Phillip Grenville Mann. The director Ray Menmuir called it "“definitely a new approach and a new treatment of the whole Ned Kelly legend." Australian drama was relatively rare on television at the time, although there had been a TV play called ''Ned Kelly'' (1959) produced. Plot The story of Ned Kelly which made him out to be "a dangerous embryo dictator, murderously vindictive and swaggeringly brutal in his hour of power." John Bell played Kelly but his face was never shown, he was only heard behind a mask. Phillip Grenville Mann (24 December 1921 – 19 June 1990) was an Australian actor, playwright, stage director and manager, and writer. He won a series of prizes as a young writer. He served in the Royal Australian Navy. He worked for six years in London. He became a staff writer at the ABC. He replaced Rex Rienits as drama editor at the ABC. Gordon Glenwright
Gordon Charles Glenwright (17 March 1918 – 25 May 1985) was an Australian actor, stage manager and playwright. He was familiar to audiences for his appearances on stage, television and film. He described himself as a "tradesman". Glenwright served as a lieutenant in the Australian Army during the Second World War. Glenwright subsequently started his career in theatre in the late 1940s, and starting in moving to television roles from the mid-1950s, he primarily appeared in serials and telemovies. Sidney Nolan
Sir Sidney Robert Nolan (22 April 191728 November 1992) was one of Australia's leading artists of the 20th century. Working in a wide variety of mediums, his oeuvre is among the most diverse and prolific in all of modern art. Rex Rienits
Rex Rienits (17 April 1909 – 1971) was an Australian writer of radio, films, plays and TV. He was a journalist before becoming one of the leading radio writers in Australia. He moved to England in 1949 and worked for a number of years there. He later returned to Australia and worked on early local TV drama. According to Richard Lane Rienits "was the most affable and generous of men; warm in his friendships, generous with his time and in his efforts to help those still with the ladder to scale. Georgie Sterling was an Australian actress, noted for her work in radio and television, especially in TV films and serials, although she also appeared in theatre. She started her career in the late 1950s and appeared in a TV movie version of Hamlet. Reginald Dawson Livermore (born 11 December 1938) is an Australian actor, singer, theatrical performer and former television presenter. Childhood From a young age, Livermore demonstrated an interest in the performing arts. Regular outings to see pantomimes at the Tivoli Theatre Sydney indicated the sort of productions he enjoyed, and hinted at the direction his career would eventually take. At the age of 13 he started hiring local halls to stage performances of his own pantomimes in aid of local charities, his casts made up of coerced neighbourhood children and school friends. Janice Dinnen (10 December 1945 – 26 January 1974) was an Australian actor of stage, film, and theatre. She was a child actor and model, given a role in the Cinerama film ''South Seas Adventure''. Her parents had emigrated from England in 1940. She married producer John Weiley, and they had a daughter. Dinnen died in a traffic accident in London in 1974.
