Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Balla, County Mayo
Balla (pronounced ''Bal'') () is a village in County Mayo, Ireland on the N60 National secondary road, the main road between Castlebar and Claremorris. The economy of the village survives mainly on passing trade, from the busy N60 which carries over 7,000 vehicles through the village every day. It is notable for its round tower. It used to be a significant shop and market centre. It fell into decline and lost its railway station, but has enjoyed something of a revival as a residential area for people working in Castlebar. In early times the village was known as 'Ros Dairbhreach', meaning 'The Height of the Oak Wood'. The continuing importance of the oak to the local community is reflected in the appropriately named "Dawn Oak 2000" project. At the beginning of the 21st century, 2000 oak trees were planted, creating a new wood in Balla's town park. The Mayo Senior Football Championship (currently known for sponsorship reasons as the ''Connacht Gold Mayo Senior Football Championship'') is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by the top Mayo GAA clubs. Westport are the title holders (2022) defeating Ballina Stephenites in the Final. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Paddy Moclair Cup, which was first presented for the 1971 final. The winners of the Mayo Senior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Connacht Senior Club Football Championship. The winners can, in turn, go on to play in the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. History The inaugural winners of the Mayo Championship were Castlebar Mitchels who won in 1888. The Mayo Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier (17-32) Mayo GAA clubs. Ballyhaunis are the title holders (2022) defeating Kilmeena in the Final. Honours The winning club competes in the Connacht Intermediate Club Football Championship. They often do well there, with the likes of Westport (2016), Hollymount Carraroe (2015), Kiltane (2013) and Charlestown Sarsfields (2012) among the clubs from Mayo to win at least one Connacht Championship after winning the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship. The winning club can, in turn, go on to play in the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football Championship. Maurice Sheridan
Maurice Sheridan (born 1974) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer. His league and championship career at senior level with the Mayo county team lasted nine seasons from 1995 until 2003. Playing career Sheridan made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was picked for the Mayo under-21 team. He won back-to-back Connacht medals in this grade, however, an All-Ireland medal remained elusive. Sheridan made his senior debut during the 1995 championship. He was a regular on the starting fifteen over much of the next decade and won three Connacht medals and one National Football League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. Management Sheridan oversaw NUI Galway to the final of the 2018 Sigerson Cup. In January 2021, Sheridan was appointed manager of the Mayo under-20 county team.
