''Ball at Savoy'' (sometimes known as ''Ball at the Savoy'') is a 1936 British operetta film directed by Victor Hanbury and starring Conrad Nagel, Marta Labarr and Fred Conyngham. The film is based on the 1932 operetta '' Ball im Savoy'' by Paul Abraham, which had been turned into an Austrian film in 1935. Victor Hanbury
W. Victor Hanbury (1897 – 14 December 1954) was a British film director and producer. Entering the film industry in 1919 after service in the First World War, he became a director and producer in the early 1930s. His last film as a director was ''Hotel Reserve'' (which he also co-produced) in 1944. He continued to produce into the 1950s. He was initially credit as both producer and director of ''The Sleeping Tiger'', but the film was actually directed by Joseph Losey. He was born in and died in London, England. Ball Im Savoy
''Ball im Savoy'' (''Ball at the Savoy'') is a jazz operetta in three acts and a prelude by Paul Abraham to a libretto by Alfred Grünwald and Fritz Löhner-Beda. It premiered on 23 December 1932 at the Großes Schauspielhaus, Berlin. However, Hitler became Chancellor five weeks later, and because composer and librettists were all Jewish, the show was forced to close down (despite its critical and popular acclaim) on 2 April, 1933. It was revived on 9 September 1933 at the New German Theatre in Prague under music director George Szell. The English-language premiere was on 8 September 1933 at the Drury Lane Theatre, London, under the title ''Ball at the Savoy'', with the libretto adapted by Oscar Hammerstein. This was Abraham's last major success. Bruno Bianco Alberto G. G. Barnabe (3 April 1905 – 20 June 1998) was an English film and stage actor. He performed in the West End, on Broadway, and in Egypt, Australia and New Zealand. Biography Barnabe was born in St Giles, London on 3 April 1905 to Tina (née Bendi) and Louis Vincent Barnabe. He married Avice Landone, who died in 1976. He trained for the stage at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where he studied mime under Theodore Komisarjevsky. Barnabe served with the British Armed Forces from 1942 through 1946. He died in June 1998. Stage career Barnabe made his first stage appearance on 4 April 1927 playing a wedding guest in ''The Dybbuk'' at the Royalty Theatre. In October 1928, Barnabe travelled to Egypt as a member of a Shakespearean company led by Robert Atkins. Fred Duprez (September 6, 1884 – October 27, 1938) was an American actor, comedian and singer who performed in vaudeville, phonograph record and film. He made phonograph recordings in the US and the UK in the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s. Most of the films he appeared in were British. He was also a writer, and wrote the popular stage farce ''My Wife's Family (play), My Wife's Family'', filmed three times in Britain, firstly in The Wife's Family, 1931; once in Sweden in 1932; and once in Finland, in Voi meitä!
