Baliakandi ( bn, বালিয়াকান্দি) is an Upazila of Rajbari District in the Division of Dhaka, Bangladesh. History Baliakandi Thana was established in 1881. This Thana was converted into an upazila in 1983. The area of the ''upazila'' town is 6.20 square kilometers. The ''upazila'' town is made up of three mouzas. The words 'Bali' of Baliari (sand dune) and 'Kanda' (river bank) of Chandana River are believed to have played a role in the naming of Baliakandi, which is built in Baliari of Chandana River. Geography The total area of Baliakandi Upazila is 228.99 square kilometers with land area of 203 square kilometers. It shares borders with Kalukhali Upazila to the north. An ''upazila'' ( bn, উপজেলা, upôzela, lit=sub-district pronounced: ), formerly called ''thana'', is an administrative region in Bangladesh, functioning as a sub-unit of a district. It can be seen as an analogous to a county or a borough of Western countries. Rural upazilas are further administratively divided into union council areas (union parishads). Union council ( bn, ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ, translit=iūniyan pariṣad, translit-std=IAST), also known as union parishad, rural council, rural union and simply union, is the smallest rural administrative and local government unit in Bangladesh. Each union council is made up of nine wards. Usually one village is designated as a ward. There are 4,562 unions in Bangladesh. A union council consists of a chairman and twelve members including three members exclusively reserved for women. Union councils are formed under the ''Local Government (Union Parishads) Act, 2009''. The boundary of each union council is demarcated by the Deputy Commissioner of the District. 2011 Bangladesh Census
In 2011, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, conducted a national census in Bangladesh, which provided a provisional estimate of the total population of the country as 142,319,000. The previous decennial census was the 2001 census. Data were recorded from all of the districts and upazilas and main cities in Bangladesh including statistical data on population size, households, sex and age distribution, marital status, economically active population, literacy and educational attainment, religion, number of children etc. Bangladesh and India also conducted their first joint census of areas along their border in 2011. According to the census, Hindus constituted 8.5 per cent of the population as of 2011, down from 9.6 per cent in the 2001 census. Bangladesh have a population of 144,043,697 as per 2011 census report.
