Baldwin Cooke
Baldwin Gardiner Cooke (March 10, 1888 – December 31, 1953), also known as Baldy Cooke, was a comedic American actor. Born in New York, Cooke and his wife, Alice, toured in vaudeville with Stan Laurel, remaining close friends over the years. He appeared in some thirty Laurel and Hardy comedies. Cooke also appeared in the Our Gang series, and supported Charley Chase in 1931's ''La Señorita de Chicago''. His grave is located at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery where Laurel's co-star, Oliver Hardy is interred. ''Blotto'' is a 1930 American pre-Code comedy film directed by James Parrott and starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The short was produced by Hal Roach and originally distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The name of the film relates to the now archaic term "to be blotto" meaning to be very drunk. Plot Set during the Prohibition era, Laurel and Hardy make plans to spend a wild night out at the Rainbow Club. Stan is at home, itching to go out, while his wife nags his every movement. Phoning Stan at home, Ollie at first continually gets Stan saying "wrong number" because his wife is watching. He then suggests a ruse by which Stan is to convince his wife, who keeps him on a short leash, that he has been called away on business. ''The Pooch'' is a 1932 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Robert F. McGowan. It was the 115th (27th talking) ''Our Gang'' short that was released. Plot The film follows cheerful vagrant Stymie and the younger Spanky as they trek through the neighborhood in search of food, with their dog, Pete the Pup, in tow. Their attempts at procuring food are mostly unsuccessful; the pair are turned away from a restaurant for not having any money. Their luck changes, however, when Stymie manages to scheme a woman out of some food under the pretense that it is for Petey, his dog. Soon after, a mean dogcatcher (Budd Fine) is seen with the rest of the gang's dogs in the back of his truck. Stymie, who wants to get back in the good graces of the gang after having previously stolen their pies, intends to win back their affections by freeing their dogs from the dogcatcher's wagon. ''The Chimp'' is a Laurel and Hardy short film made in 1932. It was directed by James Parrott, produced by Hal Roach, and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The second half of the film is a reworking from their last silent film '' Angora Love'' (1929), itself reworked into a short film the previous year, '' Laughing Gravy'' (1931). Plot The comedy duo are working at the circus. They first appear in the Pantomime horse and then as assistants to Destructo, a strongman. The circus goes bankrupt after the Big Top is destroyed when Laurel and Hardy cause Destructo's cannonball-catching act to go wrong. The circus can't pay them their wages so Oliver is given a gorilla called Ethel and Stanley a Flea Circus as a payoff. Despite the film's title, Ethel isn't a chimpanzee. Pressed into service as the kids' supervisor, Travelers Aid attendant Mr. Henderson ( Dell Henderson) suffers torment, especially when he tries to prevent three-year-old Spanky from socking the nose of every adult in sight. ''Pardon Us'' is a 1931 American pre-Code Laurel and Hardy film. It was the duo's first starring feature-length comedy film, produced by Hal Roach and Stan Laurel, directed by James Parrott, and originally distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1931. Plot As with its predecessor, '' Blotto'', the film is set during the Prohibition. The film starts with Stan and Ollie listing ingredients outside "Malt and Hops", a shop selling ingredients for brewing. Plot Jackie notices that the Gang's baseball equipment is missing and discovers Wheezer and Stymie were peddling it, along with other items, from door to door. Wheezer, Stymie, and Bologna arrive at a rich family's home and try to sell a bunch of junk to a little girl named Shirley. Stymie wanders off playing with a pet monkey and a toy lion, and sets off a burglar alarm. It was shot in January 1931 and released on February 21, 1931. It is a remake of the 1927 silent film ''Love 'em and Weep'' in which Jimmy Finlayson plays Hardy's role and Hardy plays a party guest.
