Balbina Herrera
Balbina Del Carmen Herrera Araúz (born c. 1955) is a Panamanian politician and presidential candidate in the 2009 Panamanian general election. On May 3, 2009, she lost the race to the presidency of the Republic of Panama to center-right candidate Ricardo Martinelli. Career She finished studies in the National Institute and the University of Panama, where she obtained her bachelor's degree with honours in Agronomy Engineering. She also holds post-graduate studies in education. She served as Mayor of San Miguelito, congresswoman, and President of the National Assembly (1994-1995) with the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD). When a male legislator once interrupted her to say that women should be at home with her children, she punched him and yelled, "Respect women!" 2009 Panamanian General Election
General elections were held in Panama on May 3, 2009. Presidential race Balbina Herrera was the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) candidate for President of Panama. She had previously served as President of the National Assembly of Panama during the Mireya Moscoso presidency and Housing Minister under outgoing president Martin Torrijos. Herrera won her party's primary on September 7, 2008, defeating Panama City Mayor Juan Carlos Navarro with a ten-point lead. The Liberal Party and the People's Party were in alliance with the PRD in support of Herrera. Herrera was also endorsed by Ruben Blades, a popular salsa musician who had previously run for president and served as Torrijos' Minister of Tourism, and was initially considered the favorite for the presidency. Democratic Change (Panama)
Democratic Change ( es, Cambio Democrático) is a centre-right political party in Panama. The party was founded on May 20, 1998, by Ricardo Martinelli, owner of the Super 99 supermarket chain. At the end of 2013 the party listed more than 500,000 members, making it one of Panama's two largest parties with a membership almost equal to that of the Democratic Revolutionary Party. In the legislative elections in Panama, elections of May 3, 2009, the party won 23.4% of the popular vote and 14 out of 78 seats. Juan Carlos Navarro (born October 19, 1961) is a Panamanian businessman, environmentalist, and politician and was the Mayor of Panama City, Panama until August 30 2004 and reelected for a second term until July 1 2009.
