Balbina of Rome ( la, bahl-BEE-nə), sometimes called Saint Balbina and Balbina the Virgin is venerated as a virgin martyr and saint of the Catholic Church. Legend The story of Balbina is introduced in the legendary Acts of Sts. Alexander and Balbina, where it is said that she was the daughter of Quirinus, a Tribune in the Roman Army. Usuardus speaks of her in his martyrology; his account of Balbina rests on the record of the martyrdom of Alexander I. Legend has it that Quirinus was ordered to hold Pope Alexander I and a man named Hermes in prison because of their Christian faith. They were held in separate prisons that were a great distance apart, and both were shackled and well guarded. Balbina Del Carmen Herrera Araúz (born c. 1955) is a Panamanian politician and presidential candidate in the 2009 Panamanian general election. On May 3, 2009, she lost the race to the presidency of the Republic of Panama to center-right candidate Ricardo Martinelli. Career She finished studies in the National Institute and the University of Panama, where she obtained her bachelor's degree with honours in Agronomy Engineering. She also holds post-graduate studies in education. She served as Mayor of San Miguelito, congresswoman, and President of the National Assembly (1994-1995) with the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD). Balbina Steffenone
Balbina Steffenone (also spelled Bina or Steffanone or Steffenoni, 1825–1896) was a 19th-century soprano. Born in Turin, Italy, she studied in Bologna under Teresa Bertinotti, debuting as Lucia in ''Macerata'' in 1842. After singing across Italy, she spent the years 1845 to 1847 singing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, then went to North America, where she stayed for seven years. Her appearances ranged from Boston to Mexico City and Havana, where she remained a principal in the company under Giovanni Bottesini around 1850 with whom she was involved in the second performance of the National Anthem of Mexico in September 1854. She sang in the American premiere of ''Il trovatore'' at the Academy of Music in New York, sharing the roles of Leonora and Ines in the production. Presidente Figueiredo is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Its population was 37,193 (2020) and its area is 25,422 km2. History The name of the municipality honors , the first president of the province of Amazonas at the time of the empire. The origins of the municipality are mainly related to Novo Airão and Itapiranga, since most of the territory that today is President Figueiredo was dismembered, as well as Manaus, whose neighborhood was an influential factor in the development of the region. The first settlements in these poles date from 1657, to the place where today is the municipality of Manaus, and in 1668, the place today is the headquarters of Novo Airão. The Balbina Dam ( pt, Usina Hidrelétrica de Balbina) is a hydroelectric dam and power station on the Uatumã River in the Amazon Rainforest, Brazil. The location is under the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo jurisdiction, in the state of Amazonas. Structure The Balbina Dam was built from 1985 to 1989 and is managed by Manaus Energia, under the Eletronorte system. The first of five generators began operating in February 1989.
