By 1881 the number of employed miners in the area had dropped to 150, and mining in the Balaclava Mine ceased in the 1920s. The site now operates as a tourist attraction. History John Thomas Lewis and James Meek Nickinson, two sailors, found a gold nugget in the grass at Whroo in October 1854. This happened to be the same month as the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, thus the name of the mine. Whroo is a locality in the Shire of Strathbogie and Shire of Campaspe, Victoria, Australia,.. The locality includes the Whroo Historical Area state reserve. History The first inhabitants of the area were the Ngooraialum people. The first European explorer to enter the Goulburn Valley was Thomas Mitchell. The first Europeans to visit the area were the drovers Joseph Hawdon and Charles Bonney. Squatters started settling the area in 1840. Rushworth, Victoria
Rushworth is a township in Victoria, Australia. It is located north of Melbourne and, at the 2016 Census, had a population of 1,335. History Rushworth was established during the Victorian gold rush in 1853. It was named by poet and later local Goldfields Commissioner Richard Henry Horne in 1854. Its post office opened on 16 September 1857. The goldfields became no longer viable due to the underground water table and were closed during the gold rush. The Battle of Balaclava, fought on 25 October 1854 during the Crimean War, was part of the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–55), an Allied attempt to capture the port and fortress of Sevastopol, Russian Empire, Russia's principal naval base on the Black Sea. The engagement followed the earlier Allied victory in September at the Battle of Alma, Battle of the Alma, where the Russian General Alexander Sergeyevich Menshikov, Menshikov had positioned his army in an attempt to stop the Allies progressing south towards their strategic goal. Alma was the first major encounter fought in the Crimean Peninsula since the Allied landings at Kalamita Bay on 14 September, and was a clear battlefield success; but a tardy pursuit by the Allies failed to gain a decisive victory, allowing the Russians to regroup, recover and prepare their defence.
