Baku Metro ( az, Bakı metropoliteni) is a rapid transit system serving Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. First opened on 6 November 1967 during the time of the Soviet Union, it has features typical of ex-Soviet systems, including very deep central stations and exquisite decorations that blend traditional Azerbaijani national motifs with Soviet ideology. At present the system has of bi-directional tracks, made up of three lines served by 27 stations. The metro is the only one constructed in Azerbaijan, and was the fifth built in the Soviet Union. In 2015, it carried 222.0 million, passengers, which yielded an average daily ridership of approximately 608,200. In 2019, it carried 229.7 million, which yielded an average daily ridership of approximately 629,315. Icheri Sheher (Baku Metro)
Icheri Sheher ( az, İçәri Şәhәr, ''Inner City'') is a Baku Metro station on Red Line (Line 1). It was opened on 6 November 1967 as one of the first 5 stations in Baku. Regular traffic started from 25 November 1967. The station was called Baki Soveti until 2007. In April 2007 station was renamed "Icherisheher" according to the resolution of Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan Republic. After renovation From July 2008 renovation of the station was started according to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers. In December 2008 renovation was completed, and the station was opened on 29 December. Pyramid shape has been used for the entrance of station composed of metal and glass. The outer height of the upper vestibule is 14 meters (as the height of Old City fortress). Former escalators (LT type) were substituted with “Viktoriya” in 2009. 1995 Baku Metro Fire
On 28 October 1995, a fire broke out in the subway system of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, between the stations Ulduz and Nariman Narimanov. According to official figures, the fire killed 289 people: 286 passengers (including 28 children) and three rescue workers, while 270 people were injured. The fire was deemed to have been caused by an electrical malfunction, but the possibility of sabotage was not excluded. Although a number of people who evacuated the train survived, the fire remains the world's deadliest subway disaster. One person, Chingiz Babayev, was posthumously awarded the title of the National Hero of Azerbaijan for saving passengers' lives. 1994 Baku Metro Bombings
The 1994 Baku Metro bombings was a series of terrorist incidents in Baku, Azerbaijan. The first attack was perpetrated at the "20 January" metro station, while the second one took place between the "28 May" and "Ganjlik" stations. As a result of the first attack, 14 people were killed and 49 wounded. The second attack resulted in 13 people killed and 42 injured. The responsibility was assumed by Sadval, a Lezghin separatist movement, now defunct. Eleven indirect perpetrators of the first attack were charged: two have been sentenced to life imprisonment and nine others to 15 years. The lone perpetrator of the second attack was also sentenced to life imprisonment.
