Baksan (town)
Baksan (russian: Бакса́н; kbd, Бэхъсэн) is a town in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, Russia, located northwest of Nalchik on the left bank of the Baksan River ( Terek's basin). Population: History It was founded in 1822 as a Russian military settlement. In the 1860s, the Kabarda settlement of Kuchmazukino was founded to the east of Baksan; it was renamed Staraya Krepost in 1920. In 1891, to the west of the settlement, the '' selo'' of Baksan was founded. Baksan and Staraya Krepost were merged in 1960. Urban-type settlement status was granted to it in 1965; town status was granted in 1967. Administrative and municipal status Within the framework of administrative divisions, Baksan serves as the administrative center of Baksansky District, even though it is not a part of it. Baksan (river)
The Baksan, also known as Azau (russian: Баксан, Азау) is a river in Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia. It flows east northeast and joins the Malka just before that river joins the northwest bend of the Terek. The Baksan is long, with a drainage basin of . Course The Baksan originates in the Azau glacier, on the south slopes of Mount Elbrus. Notable tributaries are the Chegem and the Cherek. On your ascent of the river, Baksan town and Tyrnyauz lie alongside it, and there is a 25 MW hydropower plant on the river. The A158 roadway lies beside it, and bestrides it several times on the way up to Nationalpark Elbrus. Baksan Neutrino Observatory
The Baksan Neutrino Observatory (BNO; Baksan is sometimes spelled Baxan) is a scientific laboratory of INR RAS located in the Baksan River gorge in the Caucasus mountains in Russia. Cleared for building in 1967, it started operations in 1977, becoming the first such neutrino observatory in the USSR. It consists of the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST), located below the surface, the gallium– germanium neutrino telescope (Soviet–American Gallium Experiment, SAGE) located 4,700 m.w.e. deep (2,100 meters) as well as a number of ground facilities. The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions ( BEST) is currently (2019) being conducted at Baksan with aims of understanding sterile neutrinos. The laboratory itself is located in a 4,000 meter long horizontal tunnel mined specifically for this purpose; this is in contrast to most underground physics laboratories which are placed in abandoned or still in-use mines.
