Baker's Dozen
A dozen (commonly abbreviated doz or dz) is a grouping of twelve. The dozen may be one of the earliest primitive integer groupings, perhaps because there are approximately a dozen cycles of the Moon, or months, in a cycle of the Sun, or year. Twelve is convenient because it has a maximal number of divisors among the numbers up to its double, a property only true of 1, 2, 6, 12, 60, 360, and 2520. The use of twelve as a base number, known as the duodecimal system (also as ''dozenal''), originated in Mesopotamia (see also sexagesimal). Counting in base-12 can easily be accomplished on one's hands by counting each finger bone with one's thumb. Using this method, one hand can count to twelve, and two hands (with the second hand as a placeholder for representing units of twelve) can count to 144. Twelve dozen (122 = 144) are known as a gross; and twelve gross (123 = 1,728, the duodecimal 1,000) are called a great gross, a term most often used when shipping or buying items in bul ...

He joined a brass band and by the age of 17 and had already become a professional musician. After leaving his home town of Withernsea, in Yorkshire's East Riding, for London, he met and began performing with the already well-known jazz musician George Chisholm. While serving in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, Baker was called up to do forces programmes. Baker was first heard on record in a British public jam session in 1941 and quickly established a strong reputation in London clubs. He was brass band trained and had faultless technical command. Enda Kenny (singer)
Enda Kenny is an Irish-born Australian folk-singer and songwriter. Kenny was born in Dublin, and migrated to Melbourne in 1987. He released his debut album, ''Twelve Songs'', in 1994. Though self-recorded and self-released, the album received generally solid reviews, and was described by the ''Sydney Morning Herald'' as "the best folk album to be released in this country since Eric Bogle's "Scraps of Paper". It was followed by ''Baker's Dozen'' in 1996, which received similarly positive reviews. A song from that album, ''Rabin'', about assassinated former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, won the Lawson Paterson Award for Songwriting at the Port Fairy Folk Festival. This was followed with a third album, '' Six of One'' in 1998, which featured a number of covers, and was less well reviewed. Kenny's song ''The Language of the Land'' from ''Twelve Songs'' was covered by English folk singer Roy Bailey in the same year. After a brief hiatus, Kenny released his fourth album, ''Cl ...

Background Phish had planned to perform a Baker's Dozen themed concert series since before their 2004 breakup. Keyboardist Page McConnell told ''Relix'' in 2007 that the original plan was to hold 13 concerts at either Madison Square Garden or the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. McConnell said the reason the shows were not held when originally planned because, "Even if creatively it made sense to the four of us, the management – I don't want to say they wouldn’t let ...

Baker's Dozen (solitaire)
Baker's Dozen is a patience or card solitaire using a single pack of fifty-two playing cards. The game is so called because of the 13 columns in the game, the number in a baker's dozen. History First published by Dick in 1883 as The Baker's Dozen, the rules have changed little since. The only exception is that, in Dick's description, the thirteen packets are dealt face down and only the top card is turned. Only when the exposed top cards are moved to the foundations or other depots, may the next card be turned over. However, in later versions, thirteen columns are dealt face up and overlapping so that all the cards are visible, making the game easier.Dick (1883), pp. 98–99. Rules First, the cards are dealt into thirteen packets of four cards each to form the tableau, resulting in 13 columns. Any king that is in the top or middle of each column must be placed on the bottom before the game starts. Two kings that are mixed into one column are placed on the bottom without chang ...
