Baja 500
The Baja 500 is a Mexican off-road motorsport race on the Baja California Peninsula that is sanctioned by SCORE International. The course has remained relatively the same over the years with the majority of events being a loop race starting and finishing in Ensenada. Race course mileage varies and is usually slightly under 500 miles. The event includes various types of vehicle classes such as Trophy trucks, Dirtbikes, Truggy, Baja Bugs, Buggies and custom fabricated race vehicles. Off-road racing is a form of motorsports consisting of specially-modified vehicles including cars, SUVs, trucks, motorbikes, quadbikes and buggies racing in off-road environments (e.g. snow, dirt, mud, etc.). North America Desert racing Desert racing began in the early 20th century. An early racing sanctioning body in North America was the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) co-founded in 1967 by Ed Pearlman. The first event was a race across the Mexican desert, south-eastwards through most of the length of Baja California, originally from Ensenada to La Paz. SCORE Class 5-1600 is open wheel limited Baja Bug class that competes in the SCORE off-road race series races including the Baja 1000, Baja 500, Baja Sur 500, San Felipe 250, and the SCORE Desert Challenge. SCORE Lites Class 12 is an open-wheel air-cooled Volkswagen motor class that competes in the SCORE off-road race series including the Baja 1000, Baja 500, Baja Sur 500, San Felipe 250 and the SCORE Desert Challenge. SCORE International, SCORE Class 11 is a stock production Volkswagen Beetle class that competes in the SCORE International, SCORE off-road race series, including the Baja 1000, Baja 500, Baja Sur 500, San Felipe 250 and the SCORE International, SCORE Desert Challenge. Class 11 is the most grueling of all off-road race vehicles as they are pure stock with modifications limited to only safety reinforcement and ground clearance. SCORE Class 8 is an off-road racing vehicle classification from SCORE International. Vehicles built from a full-sized two or four-wheel drive utility or SUV vehicle. Vehicle must have been series produced in quantities of at least 5,000 units within a 12-month period and be readily available to the general public in the United States. Class 8 vehicles cost around $100,000-300,000 with a cost per prep of $5,000-15,000. Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram are examples of vehicle that compete in this class.
