Bahama Nuthatch
The Bahama nuthatch (''Sitta insularis'') is a nuthatch species Endemism, endemic to the Bahamian pineyards, pineyards of Grand Bahama island in the The Bahamas, Bahamas. It may be Extinction, extinct as of 2019. Description It has some notable differences from its closest relative, the brown-headed nuthatch (''S. pusilla''), including a darker brown facial stripe, a longer bill, shorter wings, and a unique warbling call. Taxonomy It was previously considered a subspecies of the brown-headed nuthatch by most taxonomic authorities. A 2020 study found further evidence for it being a distinct species, finding significant vocal differences based on voice recordings and a notable genetic difference from the brown-headed nuthatch that was even larger than that of some birds unanimously considered distinct species from their mainland relatives, such as the Bahama warbler (''Setophaga flavescens'') compared the yellow-throated warbler (''S. dominica''). James Bond (ornithologist)
James Bond (January 4, 1900 – February 14, 1989) was an American ornithologist and expert on the birds of the Caribbean, having written the definitive book on the subject: '' Birds of the West Indies'', first published in 1936. He served as a curator of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. His name was appropriated by writer Ian Fleming for his fictional British spy of the same name; the real Bond enjoyed knowing his name was being used this way, and references to him permeate the resulting media franchise. Life and career Bond was born on January 4, 1900, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Margaret Reeves ( Tyson) and Francis Edward Bond. His interest in natural history was spurred by an expedition his father undertook in 1911 to the Orinoco Delta.
