Nicholas Bagenal
Sir Nicholas Bagenal or Bagenall or Bagnall (; 1509 – February 1591) was an English-born soldier and politician who became Marshal of the Irish Army (Kingdom of Ireland), Army in Ireland during the Tudor era. Early life He was born the second son of John Bagenal (died 1558), a tailor who served as Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, by his wife Eleanor, daughter of Thomas Whittingham of Middlewich, Cheshire and cousin of William Whittingham, Dean of Durham. His elder brother, Sir Ralph Bagenal, was one of Henry VIII's courtiers. In 1538 Nicholas fled to Ireland to escape justice for killing a man in the Staffordshire village of Leek, Staffordshire, Leek; his two brothers were apparently also involved in this crime. In Ireland, he became acquainted with Con O'Neill, 1st Earl of Tyrone and on 7 December 1542 the Irish council, at the suit of Tyrone, begged the King to pardon Bagenal. Hope Bagenal
Philip Hope Edward Bagenal, (11 February 1888 – 20 May 1979) was a British architectural theorist and acoustician who introduced a scientific approach to the acoustic design of buildings. Education and early career Bagenal, known by his second name, Hope, was born in Dublin, but the family moved to England when he was two years old. He attended various schools as his father moved first to the North, and then to East Anglia, finishing at Uppingham School. From 1905 to 1909 he studied engineering at Leeds University, but left without qualifying. He then joined an architectural practice in London and studied at the Architectural Association. In 1911 Bagenal joined Edwin Cooper and worked on the Port of London Authority building. By March 1914, Bagenal was in contact with Wallace Sabine, who was studying the link between reverberation and absorption in auditorium design. Henry Bagenal
Sir Henry Bagenal PC (c. 1556 – 14 August 1598) was marshal of the Royal Irish Army during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Life He was the eldest son of Nicholas Bagenal and Eleanor Griffith, daughter of Sir Edward Griffith of Penrhyn. His brother was Dudley Bagenal. Bagenal probably matriculated from Jesus College, Oxford when he was 16 (in 1572 or 1573), but left without taking a degree in order to join his father Sir Nicholas who was then marshal of the army in Ireland. In May 1577, Sir Nicholas was appointed chief commissioner of Ulster, with Henry as his assistant. Bagenal was himself knighted in 1578. He was involved in some military disasters, such as a defeat at Glenmalure on 25 August 1580 when Lord Grey led the troops (with Bagenal one of the commanders of the rear) into battle with Fiach McHugh O'Byrne and Viscount Baltinglass in the Wicklow mountain passes. Frances Bagenal
Frances "Fran" Bagenal (born 1954) is a Professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder and a researcher in the fields of space plasmas and planetary magnetospheres. Career Bagenal has worked on a number of planetary science missions including the Voyager Plasma Science (PLS) experiment, '' Galileo'', Deep Space 1, '' New Horizons'' mission to Pluto, and the ''Juno'' mission to Jupiter. Usually in her work on different missions, she is a member of the science team as a plasma scientist. Bagenal chaired NASA's Outer Planet Assessment Group that provides input from the scientific community on exploration of the outer Solar System. She appeared in ''The Farthest'', a 2017 documentary on the Voyager program, and in multiple television documentaries including the NOVA 2019 miniseries The Planets. Dudley Bagenal
Dudley Bagenal (1554–1587) was an Irish soldier and landowner of the Tudor era. Dudley was the son of the Staffordshire-born Sir Nicholas Bagenal who had settled in Ireland in the 1550s, creating a power base around Newry in Ulster thanks to the support of the dominant Gaelic lord Conn O'Neill, 1st Earl of Tyrone. Dudley was the brother of Sir Henry Bagenal, Mabel Bagenal and Anne Bagenal. He was the brother-in-law of the soldier Henry Heron. Dudley established himself as a landowner at Dunleckney Manor in County Carlow. He served as an officer in the Irish Army force sent north to Ulster to maintain order in the 1580s, being stationed in Clandeboye. He became involved in disputes with other officers, who were resentful of his father's influence. In one incident he struck a fellow officer Sir William Stanley during an argument. Lord Bagenal
Lord Walter Bagenal (1670–1745) was a member of the prominent Bagenal family, who resided in Dunleckney Manor in County Carlow, Ireland. Bagenal founded the town of Bagenalstown on the River Barrow, modelling it on Versailles, France. He was the son of Colonel Dudley Bagenal and Ann Matthew. His father was descended from an earlier Dudley Bagenal, younger son of Sir Nicholas Bagenal, founder of the Irish Bagenals; Nicholas lived in Newry, but his son became a major landowner in Carlow. The family were traditionally Catholic, but Walter turned Protestant to hold on to the estates. Though sometimes referred to as ''Lord'' Bagenal he does not in fact seem to have held a title. Walter married firstly Eleanor Barnewall and secondly Eleanor Beauchamp. Beauchamp Bagenal (1741 – 1 May 1802) was an Irish rake, buck, duelist, and politician. He was born in County Carlow in 1741, son of Walter Bagenal, and his second wife Eleanor Beauchamp, and inherited the family estates aged 11.
