Bagborough House
Bagborough House in West Bagborough, Somerset, England was built ''circa'' 1730. It was designated a Grade II* listed building on 4 May 1984. Bagborough House was built in 1739 by the Popham family, next to St Pancras Church. The saloon has decoration in the style of William Kent which dates from the original construction. The south front which has five Ionic columns, overlooks a landscaped park. The house was enlarged in 1820 when the stable block was built. Further enlargement took place in 1900. There is also a listed sundial, and walled kitchen garden. It has been the venue for various social events including the Hunt Ball of the Devon and Somerset Staghounds. The parish of West Bagborough lies on the south-west slopes of the Quantock Hills within the Quantock Hills A.O.N.B and encompasses the neighbouring hamlets of Shopnoller and Seven Ash. The village has a wide variety of properties, with a wide range of building techniques and ages. Due to its availability, local red sandstone features heavily in buildings, both ancient and modern. Church Of St Pancras, West Bagborough
The Anglican Church of St Pancras in West Bagborough, Somerset, England was built in the 15th century. It is a Grade II* listed building. History The church was built in the 15th century with additions 1643 and a Victorian restoration in 1872. The north aisle was added in 1839. The organ and communion rails were brought from a church at Brompton Ralph in 1910. Further restoration was undertaken in 1923 by Ninian Comper. The church is away from the main village, close to Bagborough House. The location of the church away from the village is believed to be a result of an outbreak of Black Death, when may of the villagers died. They then abandoned the area around the church and rebuilt houses further down the hill. The lychgate is dedicated to the memory of Robert Brooke-Popham. William Kent
William Kent (c. 1685 – 12 April 1748) was an English architect, landscape architect, painter and furniture designer of the early 18th century. He began his career as a painter, and became Principal Painter in Ordinary or court painter, but his real talent was for design in various media. Kent introduced the Palladian style of architecture into England with the villa at Chiswick House, and also originated the 'natural' style of gardening known as the English landscape garden at Chiswick, Stowe Gardens in Buckinghamshire, and Rousham House in Oxfordshire. As a landscape gardener he revolutionised the layout of estates, but had limited knowledge of horticulture. He complemented his houses and gardens with stately furniture for major buildings including Hampton Court Palace, Chiswick House, Devonshire House and Rousham. Devon And Somerset Staghounds
The red deer of Exmoor have been hunted since Norman times, when Exmoor was declared a Royal Forest. Collyns stated the earliest record of a pack of Staghounds on Exmoor was 1598. In 1803, the "North Devon Staghounds" became a subscription pack. In 1824/5 30 couples of hounds, the last of the true staghounds, were sold to a baron in Germany. Today, the Devon and Somerset is one of three staghounds packs in the UK, the others being the Quantock Staghounds and the Tiverton Staghounds. All packs hunt within Devon and Somerset. Quantock Hills
The Quantock Hills west of Bridgwater in Somerset, England, consist of heathland, oak woodlands, ancient parklands and agricultural land. They were England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956. Natural England have designated the Quantock Hills as a national character area. They are entirely surrounded by another: the Vale of Taunton and Quantock Fringes. The hills run from the Vale of Taunton Deane in the south, for about to the north-west, ending at Kilve and West Quantoxhead on the coast of the Bristol Channel. They form the western border of Sedgemoor and the Somerset Levels.
