Backlash (1947 Film)
''Backlash'' is a 1947 American crime film noir directed by Eugene Forde. The drama features Jean Rogers, Larry J. Blake, John Eldredge and Richard Travis. Plot Los Angeles police detective Jerry McMullen (Larry J. Blake) stops a car driven by lawyer John Morland (John Eldredge) to tell him of client Red Bailey's ( Douglas Fowley) jail escape. Shortly thereafter, an armed Bailey flags down Morland's car, which police find wrecked, its driver's face beyond recognition. McMullen breaks the news to the lawyer's wife, Catherine (Jean Rogers), who identifies a ring on the body as her husband's. She soon becomes a suspect. Morland's law partner O'Neil (Robert Shayne) believes that Catherine and district attorney Conroy (Richard Travis) have been having a secret affair, while his doctor says Morland once swallowed poison that his wife tried to give him. Sara Berner
Sara Berner (born Lillian Ann Herdan; January 12, 1912 – December 19, 1969) was an American actress. Known for her expertise in dialect and characterization, she began her career as a performer in vaudeville before becoming a voice actress for radio and animated shorts. She starred in her own radio show on NBC, ''Sara's Private Caper'', and was best known as telephone operator Mabel Flapsaddle on ''The Jack Benny Program''. Columnist Erskine Johnson described Berner in 1944 as "the most famous voice in Hollywood." Film noir (; ) is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and motivations. William Thomas Gray (born January 13, 1938) is an American actor, competitive motorcycle racer and inventor. Personal life Gray was born in Los Angeles, to William H. and Beatrice Gray.
