Bachtyar Ali
Bachtyar Ali Muhammed (; ckb, بەختیار عەلی; born 1960), is a Kurdish novelist, intellectual, literary critic, essayist, and poet. Ali started out as a poet and essayist, but has established himself as an influential novelist from the mid-1990s. He has published thirteen novels, and several collections of poetry and essays. Since the mid-1990s, Ali has been living in Germany (Frankfurt, Cologne and most recently Bonn). In his academic essays, he has dealt with various subjects, such as the 1988 Saddam-era Anfal genocide campaign, the relationship between the power and intellectuals and other philosophical issues. He often employs western philosophical concepts to interpret an issue in Kurdish society, modifying or adapting them to his context. Salahaddin University
Salahaddin University-Erbil (''Zankoy Selaheddîn-hewler'', ''زانکۆی سەلاحەدین-هەولێر'' in Kurdish) is one of the public higher education institution in the North of Iraq and especially in Kurdistan region. It is located in Erbil (Hewler), capital of the autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Sulaimani University-Sulaimani was established in 1968. It was moved to Erbil in 1981 and changed its name to Salaheddin university. Initially, the university included seven Academic Colleges: Science, Agriculture, Engineering, Administration, Arts, Education, and Medicine. In 1985, a college of ''Law and Politics'' was added, followed by the college of Dentistry in 1995. Several more were established in the following years so that by 2004, the university offered courses in 22 departments. Muhamed Amin Zaki
Muhammed Amin Zaki Bey, (1880 Sulaymaniyah –1948 Sulaymaniyah), was a Kurdish writer, historian and politician. He was born in Sulaimaniya, son of Hagi Abdul Rahman. After studying in Sulaimaniya Military School and Baghdad Military High School, on 10 February 1902, he graduated from the Ottoman Military Academy (P. 1317-23) as the 23rd of the class and joined the Ottoman Army as Infantry Second Lieutenant (''Mülâzım-ı Sani'' ). He graduated from the Ottoman Military College (Staff College) at Istanbul as distinguished officer (''Mümtaz subayı'' ) on 11 January 1905. Piramerd
Tawfeq Mahmoud Hamza or Piramerd ( ku, پیرەمێرد) (1867 – 19 June 1950) was a Kurdish poet, writer, novelist and journalist. He was born in the ''Goija'' neighborhood of Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region. In 1926, he became the editor of the Kurdish newspaper ''Jîyan''. He also established a private Kurdish school in Kurdistan, called ''Partukxane i Zanistî'' (Scientific School). Life Tawfeq Mahmoud Hamza was born in the ''Goyje'' neighborhood of Sulaymaniyah, Iraq in 1867. He studied Arabic and Islamic Fiqh in Sulaimaniya, and Baneh in Iran. From 1882 to 1895, he worked as an employee for different local government offices in Sulaimaniya, Halabja, Sharbazher (''Şarbajêr''). Mahwi
Mahwi ( ku, مەحوی ''Mehwî''; full name: مەلا موحەمەد کوڕی عوسمان بەڵخی ''Mala Mohammed Osman Ballkhi'') (1830-1906) was one of the most prominent classical Kurdish poets and sufis from Kurdistan of Iraq. He studied in Sablakh and Sanandaj in Iranian Kurdistan. He became a judge in the court of Slemani, in today's Iraq, in 1862, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. He travelled to Istanbul and met Abdul-Hamid II in 1883. He established a khaneqah, an Islamic religious school and mosque, in Slemani and named it after an Ottoman emperor. Sara Omar
Sara Omar ( ku, سارا عومه‌ر; born 21 August 1986 in Sulaymaniah, Kurdistan) is a Danish-Kurdish author, human rights activist and poet. She is the first internationally recognized female novelist from Kurdistan. She started out as a poet and has published several critical articles in the Middle Eastern media. Sara Omar grew up in Kurdistan but became a refugee from war in the late 1990s. She has lived in Denmark since 2001. She previously studied law before switching to political science, where she holds a bachelor's degree and is currently studying for a master's degree. Nelly Sachs Prize
The Nelly Sachs Prize (German: ''Nelly Sachs Preis'') is a literary prize given every two years by the German city of Dortmund. Named after the Jewish poet and Nobel laureate Nelly Sachs, the prize includes a cash award of €15,000. It honours authors for outstanding literary contributions to the promotion of understanding between peoples. Because there were not enough funds to honour an awardee in 2009, the prize was awarded in 2010. This was the first time that a year was skipped in the biennial schedule. Mariwan Kanie
Mariwan Wrya Kanie ( ku, مەریوان قانع, born 1966, Sulaymaniyah, Iraqi Kurdistan) is a Kurdish intellectual, writer, and political scientist. Since 1993 he lives and works in the Netherlands. He is a lecturer on the Middle East and the Arab World at the Faculty of Humanities, the Department of Hebrew, Arabic, and Jewish studies University of Amsterdam. Kanie fled Iraq in 1992. He studied political science at the University of Amsterdam between 1995-1997, and completed his PhD in humanities in 2010.
