Bachata (music)
Bachata is a genre of music that originated in the Dominican Republic in the 20th century. It is a fusion of southwestern European influences, mainly Spanish guitar music, with indigenous Taino and Sub Saharan African musical elements, representative of the cultural diversity of the Dominican population. The first recorded compositions of bachata was done by José Manuel Calderón in 1962 ("Borracho de amor") from the Dominican Republic. Bachata originates from bolero and son (and later, from the mid-1980s, merengue). The original term used to name the genre was ''amargue'' ("bitterness", "bitter music" or "blues music"), until the mood-neutral term ''bachata'' became popular. Traditional bachata is a subgenre of Bachata (music), Bachata music genre. It refers to the acoustic style of bachata that was popular in the Dominican Republic from the 1960s until about 1990. For most of that period, bachata was performed with two nylon string guitars (often with fishing line for string), an acoustic upright bass or marimbula, maracas, and bongo drum, bongo drum. Towards the end of the 1980s, Blas Duran and other bachata artists began to perform with electric guitar, and replaced the maracas with the güira. Bachata is a style of social dance from the Dominican Republic which is now danced all over the world. It is connected with bachata music. Description In partnering, the lead can decide whether to perform in open, semi-closed or closed position. Dance moves or step variety strongly depend on the music (such as the rhythms played by the different instruments), setting, mood, and interpretation. Unlike salsa, bachata dance does not usually include many turn patterns. The basic dance sequence is performed in a full 8-count moving within a square, consisting of three steps and then a tap or various forms of step syncopations (such as the "double step"). The tap is done on the opposite foot of the last step, while the next step is taken on the same foot as the tap. The dance direction may change after the tap or fourth step. ''Bachata Rosa'' (English: ''Rose Bachata'') is the fifth studio album by Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra and his group 4.40. It was released on 11 December 1990, by Karen Records. It brought bachata music into the mainstream in the Dominican Republic and gave the genre an international audience. A Portuguese version of the record was released in 1992 under the title ''Romance Rosa''; it was certified gold in Brazil. "Bachata en Fukuoka" (English: "Bachata in Fukuoka") is the first single released by Juan Luis Guerra for his album ''A Son de Guerra''. It reached No. 1 on the ''Hot Latin Tracks'' chart in 2010, the second bachata song in the year to do so. Background "Bachata en Fukuoka" is based on Guerra's experience during his trip to Fukuoka, Japan, where he was performing for the local people and was impressed by the fact that the locals could sing and dance to bachata, merengue, and mambo.
