"Babylon" is a song by British singer-songwriter David Gray (musician), David Gray. Originally released on 12 July 1999 as the second single from his fourth album, ''White Ladder'' (1998), it was re-released as the fourth single on 19 June 2000. "Babylon" peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart in June 2000 and received a platinum certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in January 2021. The single also charted in the United States, peaking at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and number one on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Adult Alternative Songs chart. A remix titled "Babylon II" appears exclusively on the US version of the album. The B-side "Over My Head" also appears on the Japanese pressing of the album as a bonus track. David Peter Gray (born 13 June 1968) is a British singer-songwriter. He released his first album in 1993 and received worldwide attention after the release of ''White Ladder'' six years later. ''White Ladder'' was the first of three UK chart-toppers in six years for Gray; it became the fifth best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK and ranked as the tenth best-selling album of the 21st century in the United Kingdom in October 2019. Iestyn Polson is an English music producer, engineer, songwriter, musician, and mixer best known for his work with David Gray, Patti Smith and David Bowie. Originally from London, Polson is currently based in New York City. Iestyn Polson grew up in London, England, and formed his first band at age 11. Polson learned to play multiple instruments throughout his childhood and later became interested in record production. Through engineering in studios in London, Polson was introduced to singer/songwriter David Gray who was compiling demos at the time. The two began working together resulting in the multi-platinum selling album White Ladder. The album was made for less than $5,000 in the UK singer-songwriter's London apartment, and combines Gray's now signature sound of electronic grooves and acoustic folk.
