Baby Universal
"Baby Universal" is a song by Anglo-American hard rock band Tin Machine, released as the second single from their ''Tin Machine II'' album in October 1991. Background and recording Lead vocalist David Bowie and guitarrist Reeves Gabrels originally recorded a demo of "Baby Universal" in 1988, prior to the actual formation of the band Tin Machine, but it was shelved for the first album after producer Tim Palmer (record producer), Tim Palmer suggested it might be "too catchy" for inclusion. The single release was backed with tracks recorded at the band's BBC session recorded for Mark Goodier's radio show on 13 August 1991, and a live appearance on the BBC's ''Top of the Pops''. Bowie re-recorded "Baby Universal" in 1996 for his 1997 album ''Earthling (album), Earthling'', but it was not released on the album, instead eventually being released in 2020 as part of the EP ''Is It Any Wonder? Tin Machine
Tin Machine were a British–American rock band formed in 1988, and fronted by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. The band consisted of Bowie on lead vocals, saxophone and guitar; Reeves Gabrels on guitar and vocals; Tony Fox Sales on bass and vocals; and Hunt Sales on drums and vocals. The Sales brothers had previously performed with Bowie and Iggy Pop during the 1977 tour for ''The Idiot''. Kevin Armstrong played additional guitar and keyboards on the band's first and second studio albums and first tour, and American guitarist Eric Schermerhorn played on the second tour and live album '' Tin Machine Live: Oy Vey, Baby'' (1992). Hunt Sales said that the band's name "reflects the sound of the band," and Bowie stated that he and his band members joined up "to make the kind of music that we enjoyed listening to", and to rejuvenate himself artistically. ''Top of the Pops'' (''TOTP'') is a British Record chart, music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969, and the Top 40 from 1984. Tony Sales
Tony Fox Sales (born September 26, 1951) is an American rock musician and composer. Normally on bass guitar, Sales and his brother, Hunt Sales, have worked with Todd Rundgren, Iggy Pop, and in Tin Machine with David Bowie. Early life and career Born in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of 1950s/'60s TV comedian Soupy Sales (January 8, 1926 - October 22, 2009) and Barbara Fox (June 23, 1931 – May 28, 2017), Tony grew up in Detroit, Michigan, with his younger brother, Hunt Sales (born 1954). His first musical group was Tony and the Tigers, with Hunt as drummer. The band also included Jon Pousette-Dart, son of artist Richard Pousette-Dart and later the leader of the Pousette-Dart Band. In 1966 the band appeared on the TV show I've Got a Secret hosted by Steve Allen, and performed two songs, "I'll Be On My Way" and "When The Party's Over," vintage clips of which are featured on YouTube. Hunt Sales (born March 2, 1954) is an American rock drummer, who has played with Todd Rundgren, Iggy Pop and Tin Machine with David Bowie. He has often worked with his brother Tony Sales, a bass guitarist. Personal life Hunt Sales is a son of the television comedian Soupy Sales. He has two daughters: Cali Sales, born in 1990, and Sugar Sales, born in 2007. Career Hunt Sales' first group was with brother Tony in Tony and the Tigers. ''Tin Machine Live: Oy Vey, Baby'' is a live album by Anglo-American rock band Tin Machine, originally released through London Records on 2July 1992. The album includes songs, all from the band's two albums, recorded between 20November 1991 and 11February 1992 from five different venues on the North American and Asian legs of Tin Machine's It's My Life Tour. The maligned album title was intended as a pun on U2's 1991 album '' Achtung Baby''. ''Oy Vey, Baby'' has received negative reviews, with many criticising the performances. It failed to chart in both the UK and the US. It was accompanied by a concert video of the same title, which was filmed at The Docks, Hamburg on 24October 1991. The It's My Life Tour was a concert tour headlined by Anglo-American hard rock band Tin Machine. The tour commenced on 5 October 1991 after two warm-up shows, one press show and three trade-industry shows, visiting twelve countries and concluding after sixty-nine performances, a larger outing than their first tour in 1989.
