Babisqa
Babisqa (بابسقا) is a village in the Dead Cities of northwestern Syria. Its archaeological remains include two churches, large and small public baths, and a marketplace as well as unidentified buildings, which were constructed between the 4th and 7th centuries CE. In 2011, the village was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Dead Cities. Location Babisqa is located in the Jebel Barisha region of the Dead Cities, within the Idlib Governorate. Archaeological remains There are two churches, public baths, and a marketplace that remain today in Babisqa. The baths at Babisqa are the only certain baths found in the Jebel Barisha region. They survive in large and small sections. Piers and arcades indicate historical two- and three-story structures at this location. Additionally, there remain tunnel vaults, which are typically found only in baths and tombs in Northern Syria and therefore help identify this structure as a bath center. Dead Cities
The Dead Cities ( ar, المدن الميتة) or Forgotten Cities ( ar, المدن المنسية) are a group of 700 abandoned settlements in northwest Syria between Aleppo and Idlib. Around 40 villages grouped in eight archaeological parks situated in north-western Syria provide an insight into rural life in Late Antiquity and during the Byzantine period. Most of the villages, which date from the 1st to 7th centuries, were abandoned between the 8th and 10th centuries. The settlements feature the well-preserved architectural remains of dwellings, pagan temples, churches, cisterns, bathhouses etc. Important dead cities include the Church of Saint Simeon Stylites, Serjilla and al Bara. Jebel Barisha
Harim Mountains ( ar, جبال حارم, Jabal Ḥārim ) are highlands in the north of Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria. The mountains are located in the Harim and Jisr Shughur districts of Idlib Governorate. Location and description The Harim highlands are located between 36◦22′–36◦40′ E and 35◦46′–36◦14′ N on the westernmost part of the Aleppo plateau. They cover about 600 km2. The Orontes river valley forms the western boundary. Al-Ruj Plain ( ar, سهل الروج) is located to the south. The Ruj plain and the northern Idlib plain run along the eastern boundary. Idlib Governorate
Idlib Governorate ( ar, مُحافظة ادلب / ALA-LC: ''Muḥāfaẓat Idlib'') is one of the 14 governorates of Syria. It is situated in northwestern Syria, bordering Turkey's Hatay province to the north, Aleppo Governorate to the east, Hama Governorate to the south, and Latakia Governorate to the west. Reports of its area vary, depending on the source, from 5,933 km2 to 6,097 km2. The provincial capital is Idlib. Bab Al-Hawa Border Crossing
The Bab al-Hawa Border Crossing ( ar, معبر باب الهوى, "Gate of the Winds Crossing") is an international border on the Syria–Turkey border. It connects the Syrian M45 and the Turkish D827 highways, between the cities of İskenderun and Idlib, and is known for its long lines of trucks and buses. The closest town on the Turkish side of the border is Reyhanlı in Hatay Province, and the closest towns on the Syrian side are ad-Dana and Atarib. The crossing is the site of a 6th-century triumphal arch. It has been an important crossing for Syrian rebels during the Syrian civil war. Archaeology There is a monumental Roman archway in Bab al-Hawa that was part of a city wall. There is a further complex of Byzantine architecture near the archway that has been largely destroyed and re-used in border construction. It features a church and another large rectangular building.
