Babera Kirata
Ratimiti Babera Kirata (1938-1991) was an I-Kiribati politician, elected in the House of Representatives in 1967 for the constituency of Onotoa. He was nominated candidate to the 1978 Gilbertese Chief Minister election. He was born in Onotoa where he was continuously elected MP from 1978 to his death, dying less than one month before the general election of May 1991. He was at that moment one of the possible candidates to the succession of Ieremia Tabai as the Beretitenti. He was one of the founders and the first president of the Gilbertese National Party and later of the National Progressive Party (Kiribati). General elections were held in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1967. All candidates ran as independents. Background Earlier in the year the British government promulgated a new constitution for the islands, creating a House of Representatives to replace the Advisory Council. Onotoa
Onotoa is an atoll of Kiribati. It is situated in the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific Ocean, from Tamana, the smallest island in the Gilberts. The population of Onotoa in the 2015 census was 1,393. The atoll is similar to many other atolls in the Gilbert Islands with its continuous line of islets and islands on the eastern side. The western side consists of a submerged reef which surrounds the islet filled lagoon. Geography Onotoa is a low lying atoll with a land area of . It has 7 villages with Tabuarorae, an islet, located at the southernmost end of the island followed by Aiaki, Otoae, Temao, Buariki, Tanaeang and Tekawa at the northernmost end of the island. 1978 Gilbertese Chief Minister Election
Elections to the post of Chief Minister were held in the Gilbert Islands on 17 March 1978. The result was a victory for Ieremia Tabai, who won 55.6% of the vote. Voter turnout was 73.5%. This was the first election in which a head of government who is not the head of state was elected to the post directly by the public, and the only one of its kind to occur outside Israel. Ieremia Tabai
Ieremia Tienang Tabai (modern spelling: Tabwai; born 16 December 1949) is an I-Kiribati politician who served as the first Beretitenti President of the Republic of Kiribati, after being the youngest ever Chief minister of the Commonwealth of Nations and then becoming the youngest ever head of State. During his presidency, he was described as being the most able leader of the Pacific island states. Gilbertese National Party
The Gilbertese National Party (GNP) was a political party in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony founded in 1965. It was the first ever party in this British colony. History Racial tensions between Gilbertese and Ellice Islanders became more pronounced at the end of 1964. A small group of Gilbertese, most of them senior civil servants, began meeting in private with the view to forming a political party committed to the defense of Gilbertese interests. A public meeting with more than 200 participants attended to the foundation in Bairiki, South Tarawa, on 16 October 1965. The National Progressive Party (NPP, GNPP in some sources) also known as the Kiribati Tabomoa Party, was a political party, first of the Gilbert Islands, then in Kiribati when it became the majority party in 1978, defeating the Gilbertese National Party.
