Babel Program
The IARPA Babel program developed speech recognition technology for noisy telephone conversations. The main goal of the program was to improve the performance of keyword search on languages with very little transcribed data, i.e. low-resource languages. Data from 26 languages was collected with certain languages being held-out as "surprise" languages to test the ability of the teams to rapidly build a system for a new language. Beginning in 2012, two industry-led teams ( IBM and BBN) and two university-led teams (ICSI led by Nelson Morgan and CMU) participated. The IBM team included University of Cambridge and RWTH Aachen University, while BBN's team included Brno University of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, MIT and LIMSI. Only BBN and IBM made it to the final evaluation campaign in 2016, in which BBN won by achieving the highest keyword search accuracy on the evaluation language. The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) is an organization within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence responsible for leading research to overcome difficult challenges relevant to the United States Intelligence Community. Speech Recognition
Speech recognition is an interdisciplinary subfield of computer science and computational linguistics that develops methodologies and technologies that enable the recognition and translation of spoken language into text by computers with the main benefit of searchability. It is also known as automatic speech recognition (ASR), computer speech recognition or speech to text (STT). It incorporates knowledge and research in the computer science, linguistics and computer engineering fields. The reverse process is speech synthesis. Some speech recognition systems require "training" (also called "enrollment") where an individual speaker reads text or isolated vocabulary into the system. The system analyzes the person's specific voice and uses it to fine-tune the recognition of that person's speech, resulting in increased accuracy. Nelson Morgan
Nelson Harold Morgan (born May, 1949) is an American computer scientist and professor in residence (emeritus) of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. Morgan is the co-inventor of the Relative Spectral (RASTA) approach to speech signal processing, first described in a technical report published in 1991. Education and career Morgan was born in Buffalo, New York. He studied at University of Chicago, later he received his PhD as an NSF fellow from University of California, Berkeley in 1980 under the supervision of Robert W. Brodersen. Morgan worked at National Semiconductor before taking up the post as a professor in residence at University of California, Berkeley. Kaldi (software)
Kaldi is an open-source speech recognition toolkit written in C++ for speech recognition and signal processing, freely available under the Apache License v2.0. Kaldi aims to provide software that is flexible and extensible, and is intended for use by automatic speech recognition (ASR) researchers for building a recognition system. It supports linear transforms, MMI, boosted MMI and MCE discriminative training, feature-space discriminative training, and deep neural networks. Kaldi is capable of generating features like mfcc, fbank, fMLLR, etc. Hence in recent deep neural network research, a popular usage of Kaldi is to pre-process raw waveform into acoustic feature for end-to-end neural models.
