BR Standard Class 5 73096
British Railways BR Standard Class 5, Standard Class 5 No. 73096 is a preserved British steam locomotive, unnamed in service. It has spent most of its time in preservation (since 1985) in the care of the Watercress Line (Mid-Hants Railway). BR Operation 73096 was built at British Railways' Derby Works in November 1955 and was used on the London Midland Region of British Railways, London Midland and Western Region of British Railways, Western Regions of British Railways. It was withdrawn from service at Patricroft depot in the north west of England in November 1967 and sold to Woodham Brothers scrapyard based in Barry, South Wales. Preservation Rescued from the scrapyard in July 1985 by Hampshire-based businessman John Bunch, 73096 was returned to service in October 1993 by the Mid-Hants Railway on the Watercress Line, following major boiler overhaul and the construction of a new tender, based on the chassis from an LMS Jubilee Class tender, to a to BR1G style. Motive Power Depot
The motive power depot (MPD) or locomotive depot, or traction maintenance depot (TMD), is the place where locomotives are usually housed, repaired and maintained when not being used. They were originally known as "running sheds", "engine sheds" or, for short, just sheds. Facilities are provided for refuelling and replenishing water, lubricating oil and grease and, for steam engines, disposal of the ash. There are often workshops for day to day repairs and maintenance, although locomotive building and major overhauls are usually carried out in the locomotive works. Priming (steam Engine)
Priming (foaming in North America) is a condition in the boiler of a steam locomotive in which water is carried over into the steam delivery. It may be caused by impurities in the water, which foams up as it boils, or simply too high a water level. It is harmful to the valves and pistons, as lubrication is washed away, and can be dangerous as any water collecting in the cylinders is not compressible and if trapped may fracture the cylinder head or piston. Causes The most frequent cause is running the locomotive with too high a level of water in the boiler and is most apparent when the regulator is opened sharply or steam demand is high. Thus, sensible locomotive management by the operators will help to prevent the occurrence. LMS Jubilee Class
The London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Jubilee Class is a class of steam locomotive designed for main line passenger work. 191 locomotives were built between 1934 and 1936. They were built concurrently with the similar looking LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0. They were nicknamed ''Red Staniers'' (due to their crimson liveries) and ''Jubs''. History The last five locomotives of Henry Fowler's Patriot class on order, 5552 to 5556, were built with William Stanier's taper boiler and so became the first of the Jubilee class. 113 locomotives were ordered straight from the drawing board.
