BMAT STEM Academy
BMAT STEM Academy is a University Technical College within the Harlow College campus in Harlow, Essex, England, which opened in September 2014 as Sir Charles Kao UTC. It was named after the Nobel Prize winning scientist Charles K. Kao who worked and studied at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories in Harlow. An Ofsted report in April 2017 gave the school a "Requires improvement" grade in all categories; at that time the school had 140 students although its capacity was 500. From April 2018, the school was re-launched as a member of BMAT, an Academy Trust, academy trust which runs schools in Essex including Burnt Mill Academy and Epping St John's. It was renamed to the BMAT STEM Academy. University Technical College
A university technical college (UTC) is a type of specialist secondary school in England that is led by a sponsor university and has close ties to local business and industry. These university and industry partners support the curriculum development of the UTC, can provide professional development opportunities for teachers, and guide suitably qualified students on to industrial apprenticeships or tertiary education. The sponsor university appoints the majority of the UTC's governors and key members of staff. Pupils transfer to a UTC at the age of 14, part-way through their secondary education. The first UTCs were established in 2010. Although there are examples of UTCs achieving the outcomes for which they were intended, such as UTC Reading, they have not all been successful. Harlow College is a further education college in Harlow, Essex, England. This medium-sized college has 5,900 students as of 2018 of which 2,585 are on 16-19 programmes and 2,000 are on adult educational programmes. Harlow is a large town and local government district located in the west of Essex, England. Standard Telecommunication Laboratories was the UK research centre for Standard Telephones and Cables (STC). Initially based in Enfield, North London, and moved to Harlow Essex in 1959. STC was a subsidiary of ITT. Notable Achievements It is now recognised as the birthplace of optical fibre communications, for it is here that Sir Charles K. Kao, George Hockham and others pioneered the use of single-mode optical fibre made from low loss glass. An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control.
