BHP Whyalla DH Class
The BHP Whyalla DH class were a class of diesel locomotives built by Walkers Limited, Maryborough for the BHP's Whyalla Steelworks between 1962 and 1968. History In 1962 three locomotives were purchased by BHP for use at its new Whyalla Steelworks. Initially used on construction trains until the facility opened in 1964. A further two were delivered in 1965. All were built for use on the standard gauge. In March 1968 a sixth was purchased for use on the narrow gauge line between Hummock Hill and the blast furnaces. Walkers Limited
Walkers Limited was an Australian engineering company, based in Maryborough, Queensland. It built ships and railway locomotives. The Walkers factory still produces railway locomotives and rolling stock as part of Downer Rail. History In 1863 John Walker and three friends set up the ''Union Foundry'' of John Walker & Co in Ballarat. In 1867 a branch was opened in Maryborough. The Ballarat assets were disposed of in 1879 and in 1884, the business became a limited company under the title ''John Walker & Co Limited'', being renamed ''Walkers Limited'' in 1888. The company produced most of the parts for machinery at sugar mills. In 1980 Walkers Limited was sold to Evans Deakin Industries. Whyalla Steelworks
The Whyalla Steelworks is a fully integrated steelworks and the only manufacturer of rail in Australia. Iron ore is mined in the Middleback Range to feed the steelworks, resulting in the distribution of finished steel products of over 90 different grades. It occupies a 1,000 ha site on the shore of False Bay, Spencer Gulf and is the largest employer in Whyalla, South Australia. Approximately 1.2 million tonnes of raw steel is produced in the steelworks each year, with about 65% of that transferred by rail to Arrium's Market Mills as billets for further processing.
