BBC Pashto
BBC Pashto ( ps, بي بي سي پښتو) is the Pashto-language station of the BBC World Service. It was launched in August 1981, and reaches out to the over 50-60 million Pashto speakers in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as the Pashtun diaspora around the world. Nabi Misdaq was its first editor. Radio Initially, the service only broadcast radio programmes - mainly News and current affairs, however, it later expanded by introducing entertainment slots, long form, features, magazines, hard talk and interactive shows such as Stasy Ghag ''Your Voice'' which is still very popular among its audience. Online In 2002, BBC Pashto launched its web page ''BBCPashto.com. In recent years they have expanded their presence on the social platform. Now BBC Pashto is available on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Soundcloud.'' Abdul Samad Rohani
Abdul Samad Rohani (1982 or 1983 – June 7 or 8, 2008) was an Afghan journalist who worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Afghan news agency Pajhwok. He was abducted in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on June 7, 2008, and found murdered the following day in Lashkar Gah. ''Reporters Without Borders'' stated that he had apparently been tortured and then shot three times. Rohani had worked in Helmand as the head of the BBC World Service's Pashto service. The BBC issued a statement praising his "courage and dedication". The Taliban reportedly denied involvement in his murder. The mass media in Afghanistan includes printing, broadcasting, and digital. It is mainly in Dari and Pashto, the official languages of the nation. According to the Attorney General's Office of Afghanistan, "there are 1,879 active media outlets in Afghanistan which were called one of the main achievements of the country in the past 18 years." Following the Taliban takeover in 2021, there is a concern that there will be a significant decrease in mass media in Afghanistan. Media history The first newspaper, ''Shams-i Nahar'' (Morning Sun) was published in 1873 during the rule of Sher Ali Khan. Another newspaper, ''Siraj-ul-Akhbar'' (Lamp of the News) was initially published on January 11, 1906, with Abdul-Rauf as editor.
