History The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), is a British organisation that hosts annual awards shows for film, television, children's film and television, and interactive media. A theatrical documentary award was presented by the Academy between 1948 and 1990. Documentaries have continued to be honoured with British Academy Television Awards since then and have been eligible in all relevant categories at the Film Awards. In 2012, the Academy re-introduced this category in recognition of the number of high-quality theatrical documentaries released in cinemas in the UK each year. Luciano Emmer
Luciano Emmer (19 January 1918 – 16 September 2009) was an Italian film director. He was born in Milan, but most of his childhood lived in Venice. He started as filmmaker at filming Giotto's frescoes in Padua in 1938. Screenwriter Sergio Amidei, found the finance for Emmer to make a feature about Romans spending a Sunday in August on the beach at Ostia. He won a Golden Globe in 1951 for '' Pictura: An Adventure in Art''. He has directed more documentaries than fiction pictures, most notably ''Domenica d'agosto'' and the romance-comedy-drama '' Three Girls from Rome''. Luciano Emmer started his career as a filmmaker working with Enrico Gras. He founded the production company Dolomiti Film and directed several documentaries. ''David'' is a 1951 British short biographical film about the Welsh miner and poet David Rees Griffiths. It was directed by Paul Dickson, who also wrote the script, shot by Ronald Anscombe, produced by James Carr, and distributed by Regent Films. Leading Welsh composer Grace Williams wrote the score for the film. The film is 38 minutes long and was given a U certificate. It was the Welsh contribution to the Festival of Britain film festival. Paul Haesaerts (15 February 1901 – 31 January 1974) was a multi talented Belgian artist. Born as Pauwel Helena Alfons Haesaerts, son of Benjamin Adolf Jan Baptist Haesaerts and Emma Philomena Spillemaeckers. As an artist he worked as an architect, filmmaker, etcher, painter, screenwriter, carpet designer and illustrator. Especially as a documentary filmmaker he was well known internationally. ''Visit to Picasso'' ("Bezoek aan Picasso") is a short Belgian documentary film from 1949 about painter Pablo Picasso, directed by Belgian filmmaker Paul Haesaerts. In an effort to capture the nature of Picasso's creative process, Paul Haesaerts asked the Spanish painter to apply his magical brushstrokes to large glass plates as Haesaerts filmed from the other side. This film actually predated the more famous art film '' The Mystery of Picasso'' (1956) by Henri-Georges Clouzot, in which Picasso painted on large transparent canvases as the director filmed from the other side. The filming took place in Picasso's studio in Vallauris. Nicole Védrès (4 September 1911 – 20 November 1965), born Nicole Henriette Désirée Charlotte Cahen dit Nathan dit Rais, was a French author, columnist, essayist, journalist, screenwriter and film director. Life and work Védrès was born on 4 September 1911 in Paris. An important figure in the post-war French cultural world, she signed several articles under different names, including “Nathan” and “Rais.” Nicole Vedrès was the daughter of Jules Rais, doctor of law, librarian of the Chamber of Deputies and art critic, and Ludmila Savitzky, of Russian origin and who was a translator of works by James Joyce. Although Vedrès studied international law, she began a career as a journalist in the 1930s, writing for women's magazines and literary journals such as the ''Mercure de France''. James Algar
James Algar (June 11, 1912 – February 26, 1998) was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He worked at Walt Disney Productions for 43 years and received the Disney Legends award in 1998. He was born in Modesto, California and died in Carmel, California. Controversy Algar directed an Oscar-winning documentary '' White Wilderness,'' which contains a scene that supposedly depicts a mass lemming migration, and ends with the lemmings leaping into the Arctic Ocean. In 1982, the CBC Television news magazine program '' The Fifth Estate'' broadcast a documentary about animal cruelty in Hollywood called ''Cruel Camera'', focusing on ''White Wilderness'', as well as the television program ''Wild Kingdom''. Thor Heyerdahl KStJ (; 6 October 1914 – 18 April 2002) was a Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer with a background in zoology, botany and geography. Heyerdahl is notable for his ''Kon-Tiki'' expedition in 1947, in which he sailed 8,000 km (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between societies. This was linked to a diffusionist model of cultural development. Heyerdahl made other voyages to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient peoples, notably the ''Ra II'' expedition of 1970, when he sailed from the west coast of Africa to Barbados in a papyrus reed boat.
