Bālarama (magazine)
''Balarama'' () is an Indian weekly comic magazine published by M. M. Publications, of Malayala Manorama Group from Kottayam, Kerala in Malayalam language (digest-sized, on every Friday). It is one of most widely read children's magazines in India (Indian Readership Survey 2019, Quarter IV). Balarama celebrated its 50th year of publication in the year 2022. Starting as a monthly for teenage youngsters in March 1972, the ''Balarama'' became a fortnightly periodical in November 1984, before finally settling as a weekly in 1999. Along with the comics (in-house and syndicated), the content includes fables and fairy tales, rhymes, (translated) literary classics, and various puzzles. ''Balarama'' is known for its decades-long partnership with Amar Chitra Katha/India Book House (thus publishing Shikari Shambu, Kapish, Kalia the Crow, Suppandi and Tantri the Mantri and the Malayalam Amar Chitra Katha). ''Malayala Manorama'' is a morning newspaper in Malayalam published from Kottayam, Kerala, India by the Malayala Manorama Company Limited. Currently headed by Mammen Mathew; it was first published as a weekly on 22 March 1888, and currently has a readership of over 20 million (with a circulation base of over 2.4 million copies). It is also the second oldest Malayalam newspaper in Kerala in circulation, after '' Deepika'', which is also published from Kottayam. ''Manorama'' also publishes an online edition. According to World Association of Newspapers, as of 2016, it was the fourteenth most circulated newspaper in the world. Parutholli Chalappurathu Kuttikrishnan, popularly known by his pen name Uroob ( ml, ഉറൂബ്; 1915 – 1979) was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature. Along with Basheer, Thakazhi, Kesavadev, and Pottekkatt, Uroob was counted among the progressive writers in Malayalam during the twentieth century. He was known for his novels such as Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum and Ummachu, short stories like ''Rachiyamma'' and the screenplays of a number of Malayalam films including ''Neelakuyil'', the first Malayalam feature film to receive the National Film Award. ''Māyāvi'' is a Malayalam comic strip appearing in the Indian comic magazine ''Balarama'' owned by MM Publications. The series, was first published in the August 1984 issue of Balarama. Artist M. Mohandas gradually took over the drawing of the series after Balarama became a fortnightly. Māyāvi, the protagonist in the series, is an imp, who helps keep the forest safe from villains and dark wizards. Most of the stories revolves around how two dark magicians and their companions try to capture Māyāvi, but fail hilariously. ''Māyāvi'' takes place in a secluded forest in Kerala. It is not exactly known when the story takes place. In the local language Malayalam Māyāvi is a combination of two words (māya+āvi) when translated mean magic and spirit respectively. As the target audience is young, the story takes the liberty to draw a fantasy world, in which wizards, demons and other strange creatures exist. Soothran
Soothran (Malayalam: സൂത്രൻ) is the titular protagonist of the Indian comic series that appears regularly in the Malayalam children's magazine '' Balarama. ''The comics are conceptualized by Luis Fernandes (the editor of ''Tinkle'') and N. M. Mohan, written by Madhavan Namboothiri and illustrated (currently) by Simi Muhamma. The story revolves around a smart jackal named Soothran who lives in a cave in the jungle. His best friend, Sheru, is a dumb and cowardly tiger. The strips depict the adventures of the two friends, and is noted for its funny twist endings. The comic strip, launched in mid-2001 (July), was a huge success. Unlike other comics in Malayalam, it became widely popular among Kerala youth also and soon became a flagship strip of the magazine. Henry (comics)
''Henry'' is a (the funniest living American) comic strip created in 1932 by Carl Thomas Anderson. The title character is a young bald boy who is mute (and sometimes drawn minus a mouth). With the exception of a few early episodes, the comic strip character communicates largely but not entirely through pantomime, a situation which changed when Henry moved into comic books. Henry has spoken in at least one Betty Boop cartoon from 1935. In the feature Betty Boop has a pet shop and Henry speaks to a dog in the window.
