Byrsonima Wadsworthii
''Byrsonima wadsworthii'' (almendrillo in Spanish) is a rare plant known only to the Luquillo Mountains and the Cordillera Central in Northeastern Puerto Rico. First described by botanist Elbert Luther Little Elbert Luther Little, Jr. (born October 15, 1907, in Fort Smith, Arkansas; died June 23, 2004) was an American botanist whose career spanned 70 years and largely concerned forest botany. Sierra De Luquillo
The Sierra de Luquillo is a mountain range located in the northeastern part of Puerto Rico. Also known as the Luquillo Mountains, these are steep-sided, densely-forested mountains rising to elevations of around , the highest point being the summit of El Toro, closely followed by that of Pico El Yunque. Geography The mountains of the Sierra de Luquillo were formed by tectonic activity some 37 to 28 million years ago, the island being on the junction between the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate. The main rock types are pyroclastic rocks, quartzdiorite and contact metamorphic hornfels, with some outcrops of alluvium, basalt and mafic rocks. Nine rivers have their sources in the mountains, flowing downward through steep, rocky and boulder-strewed channels before reach the coastal plains. Cordillera Central (Puerto Rico)
Cordillera Central (English: Central Mountain Range), is the main mountain range in Puerto Rico. The range crosses the island from west to east and divides it into its northern and southern coastal plains. The Cordillera Central runs eastward from the municipality of Maricao in the west to Aibonito in the central eastern region, and on to the Caribbean in the southeast through the Sierra de Cayey. The Central Mountain Range consists of the ''Cordillera Central proper'' and numerous subranges (such as the Sierra de Cayey), foothills and ridges that extend throughout the island. Cerro de Punta is both the highest peak of the Cordillera Central and the highest point in Puerto Rico. Elbert Luther Little, Jr. (born October 15, 1907, in Fort Smith, Arkansas; died June 23, 2004) was an American botanist whose career spanned 70 years and largely concerned forest botany. Although he was born in Arkansas, and died in Oregon, he grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma from the age of two and spent much of his life in Arlington, Virginia. El Yunque National Forest
El Yunque National Forest ( es, Bosque Nacional El Yunque), formerly known as the Caribbean National Forest (or ''Bosque Nacional del Caribe''), is a forest located in northeastern Puerto Rico. It is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System and the United States Forest Service. El Yunque National Forest is located on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains, encompassing more than 28,000 acres (43.753 mi2 or 113.32 km2) of land, making it the largest block of public land in Puerto Rico. The highest mountain peaks in the forest rises above sea level. The second highest mountain within El Yunque forest is also named Pico El Yunque. International Institute Of Tropical Forestry
The International Institute of Tropical Forestry () is a program of the United States Forest Service that was founded in 1939. It is headquartered in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, on the grounds of the University of Puerto Rico's Agricultural Experimental Station. May 20, 2014 marked the Institute's 75th anniversary.
