Burpee Seeds and Plants, officially W. Atlee Burpee & Co., is an American Seed company, seed and plant company that was founded by Washington Atlee Burpee in Pennsylvania in 1876. History Early years (1876-1915) W. Atlee Burpee & Company was founded in 1876 by Washington Atlee Burpee in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after starting a mail-order chicken business in 1876. The company expanded to selling garden seeds, farm supplies, tools and hogs after customers began asking for seeds they had grown in their native farms. In 1888, the family farm, Fordhook Farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, was established as a family farm and crop field trials after Burpee began traveling to Europe to collect seeds which needed to be adapted to North American climates. The burpee, a squat thrust with an additional stand between repetitions, is a full body exercise used in strength training. The movement itself is primarily an anaerobic exercise, but when done in succession over a longer period can be utilized as an aerobic exercise. The basic movement as described by its namesake, physiologist Royal H. Burpee, is performed in four steps from a standing position and known as a "four-count burpee": # Move into a squat position with your hands on the ground. # Kick your feet back into an extended plank position, while keeping your arms extended. # Immediately return your feet into squat position. # Stand up from the squat position. Hanksville-Burpee Quarry is the name given a paleontological excavation site approximately wide by long near Hanksville, Utah, USA, where scientists have found a large mix of remains of sauropods, trees, freshwater clams and other species dating between 145 million years ago to 150 million years ago. The mixed assortment of remains deposited in this one location provide a unique opportunity to scientists to study the paleoecology of the area in the late Jurassic period. In June 2008, following three weeks of excavation, paleontologists from the Burpee Museum of Natural History and Western Illinois University announced major discoveries made at the site, including a probable ''Stegosaurus'', four sauropods and at least two carnivorous dinosaurs. The Burpee Museum of Natural History is located along the Rock River in downtown Rockford, Illinois, United States, at 737 North Main Street. Museum history The museum was created as a Works Progress Administration project. It was established in 1941 and opened on May 24, 1942. The complex is made up of four buildings — the Manny Mansion, the Barnes Mansion, the Solem Wing, and the Water Lab. The Solem Wing is the public portion of Burpee Museum. Built in the winter of 1998, the Solem Wing houses the museum's exhibits, meeting rooms, laboratories, gift shop, and the Mahlburg Auditorium. It is named after Robert H. Solem who was a major benefactor, patron, and friend of the museum. The Manny Mansion was owned by John P. Manny and was built in 1852. Lawrence Johnstone Burpee (March 5, 1873 – October 13, 1946) was a Canadian librarian, historian and author. Biography Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he moved to Ottawa at an early age, where from 1890 to 1905 he worked as private secretary to three federal ministers of justice. The following seven years he was librarian at the Ottawa Public Library, before becoming Canadian Secretary of the International Joint Commission in 1912, a post he occupied until his death. Burpee helped found the Canadian Historical Association in 1922 and was its first president until 1925. He also was president of the Royal Society of Canada in 1936/37. He published many books and articles mainly related to Canadian history and geography and was the founding editor of the '' Canadian Geographical Journal''. Judson Burpee Black (August 15, 1842 – December 9, 1924) was a Canadian physician and politician. Born in St. Martins, New Brunswick, the son of Thomas Henry Black and Mary E. Fownes, Black was educated at the public schools of St. Martins and Saint John, New Brunswick, Mount Allison Academy, Mount Allison University and Dartmouth Medical College. A physician, he was mayor of Windsor, Nova Scotia, from 1884 to 1885 and from 1901 to 1903. He was president of the Windsor Board of Trade in 1900 and 1901. He was president for Nova Scotia of the Canadian Medical Association in 1904–05.
