Bull And Mouth Inn
The Bull and Mouth Inn was a coaching inn in the City of London that dated from before the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was located between Bull and Mouth Street (now Postman's Park) in the north and Angel Street in the south. It was once an important arrival and departure point for coaches from all over Britain, but particularly for the north of England and Scotland. It became the Queen's Hotel in 1830 but was demolished in 1887 or 1888 when new post office buildings were built in St Martin's Le Grand. Origins The original name of the inn was the Boulogne Mouth in reference to the town and harbor of Boulogne which was besieged by the English king Henry VIII in 1544–1546. Over time, the name became the ''Bull and Mouth''. The inn building was destroyed in the Great Fire of London of 1666 but rebuilt. St. Martin's Le Grand is a former liberty within the City of London, and is the name of a street north of Newgate Street and Cheapside and south of Aldersgate Street. It forms the southernmost section of the A1 road. College of canons and collegiate church To the east of the road in medieval times stood a college of secular canons of ancient origin, with a collegiate church dedicated to St Martin of Tours. The institution was situated in the City of London parish of St Leonard, Foster Lane. According to a somewhat dubious tradition, the college and church dated to the 7th or 8th century and was founded by King Wihtred of Kent. Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (16 January 1793, France – 1864) was a British topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings. Life and work Thomas was the brother of topographical artist George Shepherd (artist), George "Sidney" Shepherd, Thomas was employed to illustrate architecture in London, and later Edinburgh, Bath, Somerset, Bath and Bristol. His paintings were the basis for steel engravings in many books (see bibliography). Shepherd's work, mostly topographical, is characterized by an attention to detail, along with lifelike scenes that contained people, carriages and horses. George Walter Thornbury (13 November 1828 – 11 June 1876) was an English author. He was the first biographer of J. M. W. Turner. Early life George Thornbury was born on 13 November 1828, the son of a London solicitor, reared by his aunt and educated by her husband, Reverend Barton Bouchier. James Savage (architect)
James Savage (1779–1852) was a British architect, based in London. His works included the Richmond Bridge (now the O'Donovan Rossa Bridge) in Dublin, and St Luke's Church, Chelsea, a pioneering work of the Gothic Revival. He was architect to the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, and carried out restoration work at Lincoln Cathedral and St Mary-le-Bow. In 1836 he published a pamphlet in which he attacked the slavish imitation of historical styles. Life Savage was born in Hoxton, London, on 10 April 1779. Edward Sherman (1776 – 14 September 1866) was a stagecoach proprietor from Berkshire who became the second largest operator of stagecoaches in England after William Chaplin. Early life The son of Edward Staniford icSherman, a farmer and smith, and Mary nee Sawyer, Edward Sherman was born at South Moreton in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) in 1776. Reportedly, an uncle he was living with boxed his ears and as a result in 1793 he made his way from Wantage to London where he gained a poor livelihood in Oxford Market.
