Buffalo Gap, South Dakota
Buffalo Gap (Lakota: ''pté tȟathíyopa otȟúŋwahe''; "buffalo gap village") is a town in Custer County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 131 at the 2020 census. History A very old western South Dakota town, Buffalo Gap was founded in 1877. By 1885, it was a railroad spur for the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad line, with more than 1,200 residents. Today, the town has about 180 residents. In its early years it was one of the largest towns in South Dakota, but it received the same fate as many other towns of that era. A resident's cow kicked over a lantern and it burned the town to the ground, as happened with the Great Chicago Fire and many others. The town never fully recovered and was never rebuilt to its former grandeur. The name comes from a gap to the west of town that sheltered buffalo herds in earlier times. Buffalo Gap is an incorporated town in Taylor County, Texas, Taylor County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Abilene, Texas Abilene, Texas metropolitan area, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 464 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. It is the former county seat of Taylor County, having been supplanted in 1883 by the much larger Abilene to its north. Abilene won the referendum to be the county seat by a vote of 905–269. Buffalo Gap is the home of the large Buffalo Gap Historic Village, open year-round to visitors. Buffalo Gap is an unincorporated community in Augusta County, Virginia, United States. Buffalo Gap is located approximately northwest of Staunton, Virginia. History Buffalo Gap experienced a boom when an iron furnace was built there by the Buffalo Gap Furnace Company. A town of about 70 houses, a railroad station, a post office, and several schools were built around the furnace in the coming years. Augusta County, Virginia
Augusta County is a county in the Shenandoah Valley on the western edge of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The second-largest county of Virginia by total area, it completely surrounds the independent cities of Staunton and Waynesboro. Its county seat is Staunton, but most of the administrative services have offices in neighboring Verona. The county was created in 1738 from part of Orange County and was named after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. It was originally a huge area, but many of its parts were carved out to form other counties and several states until the current borders were finalized in 1790. Buffalo Gap High School (BGHS) is a public school located in Swoope, Virginia.
