Brookwood Railway Station
Brookwood is a National Rail railway station in Brookwood in the English county of Surrey. It is down the line from . History The London and Southampton Railway (L&SR) was authorised on 25 July 1834. It was built and opened in stages, and the second section, that between (then known as Woking Common) and , was opened on 24 September 1838; there was only one intermediate station on this section, at Farnborough. On 4 June 1839, the L&SR was renamed the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). Funeral trains from London to Woking Cemetery first ran in 1849. The opening of Brookwood Cemetery (and the associated London Necropolis railway station close to London Waterloo) led to an increase in the funeral traffic. A branch line left from the main line station to serve two stations within the cemetery, Brookwood Cemetery North and Brookwood Cemetery South. Brookwood, Surrey
Brookwood is a village in Surrey, England, about west of Woking, with a mixture of semi-rural, woodland-set and archetypal suburban residential homes. It lies on the western border of the Woking Borough, with a small part of the village in Guildford Borough. As part of the 2016 boundary review, Brookwood became part of the Heathlands ward which comprises Brookwood, Bridley, Hook Heath, Mayford, Sutton Green and Barnsbury and Wych Hill. The village is known for the 500-acre Brookwood Cemetery, also called the London Necropolis. The village also gave its name to the former Victorian Brookwood Hospital, once the leading mental institution in Surrey. Since its closure in 1994, it has been redeveloped as housing. Alton Line
The Alton line is a railway line in Hampshire and Surrey, England, operated by South Western Railway as a relatively long branch of the South West Main Line. The branch leaves the main line at Pirbright Junction to the west of Brookwood station, Surrey, then turns to the southwest. The route crosses and recrosses the Surrey / Hampshire border, and serves the towns of Aldershot and Farnham before reaching its present-day terminus at Alton in East Hampshire. The line originally continued west to Winchester; the section between Alton and New Alresford is preserved as the heritage Watercress line. The Alton line was electrified (750 V DC third rail) during the late interwar years by Southern Railway. Woking Railway Station
Woking railway station is a major stop in Woking, England, on the South West Main Line used by many commuters. It is down the line from . The station is managed by South Western Railway, who operate all trains serving it. History The London and Southampton Railway (L&SR) was authorised on 25 July 1834 and construction began in October of that year. The line was built in stages, and the first section, between the London terminus at and "Woking Common", was opened to passengers on 21 May 1838. Woking Common station was built with two platforms linked by a footbridge and a small freight yard was also provided. When it opened, it was surrounded by open heath and was from what is now the village of Old Woking. Alton Railway Station
Alton railway station is a station in the town of Alton, in the English county of Hampshire. The station is the terminus for two railway lines: the '' Alton Line'' which runs to Brookwood and on to London Waterloo, and the '' Mid Hants Watercress Railway'' which runs to Alresford. The latter once ran through to Winchester but was closed to passengers in February 1973; it reopened as a heritage line in 1985. Two other routes, both now closed, also served the station – the Meon Valley line to Fareham and the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway. Services operate along the Alton Line to Brookwood and join the South West Main Line towards London Waterloo. The line was single-tracked as far as Farnham by British Rail in the early 1980s. South West Main Line
The South West Main Line (SWML) is a 143-mile (230 km) major railway line between Waterloo station in central London and Weymouth on the south coast of England. A predominantly passenger line, it serves many commuter areas including south western suburbs of London and the conurbations based on Southampton and Bournemouth. It runs through the counties of Surrey, Hampshire and Dorset. It forms the core of the network built by the London and South Western Railway, today mostly operated by South Western Railway. Network Rail refers to it as the South West Main Line. Operating speeds on much of the line are relatively high, with large stretches cleared for up to running.
