Bromfield Baronets
The Bromfield Baronetcy, of Southwark in the County of Surrey, was a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 20 March 1661 for John Bromfield. The second Baronet was High Sheriff of Surrey in 1689. The title became either extinct or dormant on the death of the third Baronet in 1733. Baronetage Of England
Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. The Baronetage of England comprises all baronetcies created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union in 1707. Edward Bromfield
Sir Edward Bromfield was an English merchant who was Lord Mayor of London in 1636. Bromfield was a city of London merchant and a member of the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers. He was Master of the Leathersellers Company from 1625 to 1626. On 14 March 1626 he was elected an alderman of the City of London for Dowgate ward. He was Sheriff of London from 1626 to 1627, He translated to Worshipful Company of Fishmongers on 22 March 1636. In 1636, he was elected Lord Mayor of London and was also Prime Warden of the Fishmongers Company. He became alderman for Walbrook ward in 1637 and was knighted on 4 June 1637. He was Governor of the Irish Society from 1637 to 1638 and Colonel of the Trained Bands from 1638 to 1642. Bromfield married Margaret Payne, daughter of John Payne of Southwark.
