The West Indies Federation took part in the 3rd Pan American Games, held in Chicago, USA from 28 August 28 to 7 September 1959, under the name British West Indies. These were the only Pan American Games attended by the British West Indies, as the nation dissolved in 1962. British West Indies ended up 7th on the overall medal table, and 2nd on the medal table for Athletics. 1959 Pan American Games
The 1959 Pan American Games were held in Chicago, Illinois, United States between August 28 and September 7, 1959. Host city selection One city initially submitted a bid to host the 1959 Pan American Games that was recognized by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), along with three cities that withdrew their bids. On March 11, 1955, at the IV Pan American Congress in Mexico City, PASO selected Cleveland unanimously to host the III Pan American Games. On April 15, 1957, Cleveland asked PASO to be relieved of their assignment as the host city. Subsequently, both Guatemala City and Rio de Janeiro informed PASO that they would not be able to host the games either. Two cities came forward as candidates host the games, Chicago and São Paulo, and on August 3, 1957, Chicago was selected over São Paulo by a vote of 13 to 6. Ernle Haisley
Ernest Leighton "Ernle" Haisley (born 20 June 1937) is a Jamaican former high jumper who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics. In 1956, Haisley took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He reached a height of 1.96 metres in the final, placing him 15th. Haisley represented Jamaica at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games winning gold in the high jump with a height of 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m). This remained the Commonwealth Games high jump record until 1962. Wilton Jackson (born 15 November 1935) is a Trinidad and Tobago sprinter. Wilton Jackson took part in the 4 x 440 yards relay at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. Trinidad and Tobago did not qualify for the final. Representing the British West Indies, Jackson took bronze in the 4×100 metres relay at the 1959 Pan American Games. Clifton Bertrand
Clifton Bertrand (2 March 1936 – 28 November 2020) was a Trinidadian sprinter. Biography He won a gold medal in 200 meters at the 1957 British West Indies Championships, and three gold medals at the 1958 British West Indies Championships. He participated in three events at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, but did not reach the final in either. However, at the 1959 Pan American Games he finished fifth in the 200 metres and won a bronze with the British West Indian Federation 4 x 100 metres relay team. His teammates were Michael Agostini, Wilton Jackson and Jamaican Dennis Johnson. Bertrand then competed at the 1960 Olympic Games, reaching the quarter-finals of the 200 metres. Dennis Osric Johnson Order of Distinction, OD (6 May 1939 – 22 April 2021) was a Jamaican sprinter who equalled the world record, 9.3 seconds, for the 100-yard dash in 1961. The West Indies Federation, also known as the West Indies, the Federation of the West Indies or the West Indian Federation, was a short-lived political union that existed from 3 January 1958 to 31 May 1962. Various islands in the Caribbean that were part of the British Empire, including Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, and those on the Leeward and Windward Islands, came together to form the Federation, with its capital in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Michael George Raymond Agostini (23 January 1935 – 12 May 2016) was a Trinidadian track and field athlete.
