Bridgman's Legal Bibliography
''A Short View of Legal Bibliography'' is a book by Richard W. Bridgman. It was first published in 1807. In 1835, David Hoffman said this book was "wholly unworthy of the subject". In 1847, John Gage Marvin said: In 1988, ''Bookman's Yearbook'' said that the fact that this book was still in use indicated "the sorry state" that legal bibliography was in, the book being "like a third class Lowndes or Brunet". Richard Whalley Bridgman
Richard Whalley Bridgman (c.1761–1820) was an English attorney and writer on law. Life Richard Whalley Bridgman was baptised on 9 March 1762, the son of Richard Bridgman and Sarah Whalley. He was an attorney and was employed as a clerk of the Grocers' Company in 1787. By June 1796 he had embezzled over £2,317, which he could not repay. He was declared a bankrupt and was subsequently imprisoned in Fleet jail before his release in 1804. He was already a widower by 1797 and on 29 August 1797 he married Ann Lanty of Greenwich at St Martin in the fields. John Gage Marvin
John Gage Marvin (1815–1855) was an American lawyer, known as a legal bibliographer and figure of the history of California. Early life He was born at Le Raysville, Pennsylvania, and was educated at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He then taught at Athens Academy, Athens, Pennsylvania from 1840.Michael H. Year Books
The Year Books are the modern English name that is now typically given to the earliest law reports of England. Substantial numbers of manuscripts circulated during the later medieval period containing reports of pleas heard before the Common Bench. In the sixteenth century versions of this material appeared in print form. These publications constituted the earliest legal precedents of the common law. They are extant in a continuous series from 1268 to 1535, covering the reigns of King Edward I to Henry VIII. The language of the original manuscripts and editions was either Latin or Law French. Maitland and others have considered that the medieval manuscripts were compiled by law students, rather than being officially sanctioned accounts of court proceedings. The best-known printed version is the so-called "Vulgate" edition, which appeared in a series of volumes between 1678 and 1680, and which became the standard edition consulted by practising lawyers. Octavo
Octavo, a Latin word meaning "in eighth" or "for the eighth time", (abbreviated 8vo, 8º, or In-8) is a technical term describing the format of a book, which refers to the size of leaves produced from folding a full sheet of paper on which multiple pages of text were printed to form the individual sections (or ''gatherings'') of a book. An octavo is a book or pamphlet made up of one or more full sheets (e.g. of A2 paper) on which 16 pages of text were printed, which were then folded three times to produce eight leaves. Each leaf of an octavo book thus represents one eighth the size of the original sheet. Other common book formats are folios and quartos. ''Octavo'' is also used as a general description of the ''size'' of books that are about tall (almost A4 paper size), and as such does not necessarily indicate the actual printing format of the books, which may even be unknown as is the case for many modern books. Legal bibliography is the bibliography of law. The term has been applied to "the kinds and functions of legal materials" and to "lists of law books and related materials". Percy Winfield said that a "perfect legal bibliography" would be "a critical and historical account of every known source of the law of the state with which it assumes to deal". History In 1835, David Hoffman said that the legal bibliography of France and Germany, especially in the separate treatises on various branches of the law, was, by that date, "extensive, exact and learned".
