Bridgewater is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 1,522 at the 2010 census. The Town of Bridgewater is on the southern border of the county. The town has a former village called Bridgewater near the southern town line. The town and hamlet were named after the Duke of Bridgewater. History The first settlement took place ''circa'' 1788. The Town of Bridgewater was formed from the Town of Sangerfield in 1797. Bridgewater was the first municipality in New York State to elect an African American mayor, Everett Holmes, in 1974. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 23.9 square miles (61.8 km), all land. U.S. 20 crosses the southern part of the town, where it intersects NY 8. The southern town line is the border of Madison and Otsego counties. The eastern town line is the border of Herkimer County.
