Brian Santarpia
Brian Walter Natale Santarpia is a Canadian naval officer. He joined Maritime Command (Canada), Maritime Command in 1986 and served in various postings before rising to commanding officer of the frigate from 2007 to 2008. This was followed by a posting to Commanding Officer of Sea Training Atlantic and then advisor to the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (Canada), Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. Santarpia then commanded Canada's chief naval base on its Atlantic coast, CFB Halifax, with promotion to Commodore (naval), commodore and the position of Director General Naval Personnel. In June 2020, Santarpia became Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic. In the Canadian Forces, Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) is responsible for the fleet training and operational readiness of the Royal Canadian Navy in the Atlantic Ocean and Arctic Ocean. The Canadian Forces' Decoration (post-nominal letters "CD") is a Canadian award bestowed upon members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have completed twelve years of military service, with certain conditions. By convention, it is also given to the Governor General of Canada upon his or her appointment as viceroy, which includes the title of Commander-in-Chief in and over Canada. The decoration is awarded to all ranks, who must have a good record of conduct during the final eight years of claimed service. The Special Service Medal (french: Médaille du service spécial) is a service medal awarded to members of the Canadian Forces. The medal was established by letters patent by Queen Elizabeth II on 16 June 1984. Recipients of this medal must have performed, "service under exceptional circumstances". The medal is always issued with a bar which specifies the special service which the medal recognizes. Each bar has its own criteria. Appearance The medal is made of copper and zinc alloy and is circular, in diameter. The obverse depicts a maple leaf surrounded by a laurel wreath. The reverse contains the inscription "SPECIAL SERVICE SPÉCIAL", curving along the bottom edge of the medal. In the centre is the St Edward's Crown and Royal Cypher.
