Breakbeat Science Recordings
Breakbeat Science Recordings was a drum and bass record label and record store of the same name based in Manhattan in New York City, New York; both the label and the store were founded in 1996, and a website was launched in 1997. Breakbeat Science was the first store dedicated to Drum and Bass music in the US, at the time of its opening the scene was still primarily based in the UK. Breakbeat Science moved several times over the years. The first location was on 9th Street and the store later moved to Orchard Street, both in Manhattan's East Village. After the Orchard Street location closed, the remaining backstock was moved to the Halcyon record shop in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The label has been associated with a number of respected DJs and producers, including DJ DB and DJ Dara, who along with Paul Morris and Sean "Shooter" own the store and label, and also Pieter K, DJ Abstract, and AK1200. Drum And Bass
Drum and bass (also written as drum & bass or drum'n'bass and commonly abbreviated as D&B, DnB, or D'n'B) is a genre of electronic dance music characterized by fast breakbeats (typically 165–185 beats per minute) with heavy bass and sub-bass lines, samples, and synthesizers. The genre grew out of the UK's rave scene in the 1990s. The popularity of drum and bass at its commercial peak ran parallel to several other UK dance styles. A major influence was the original Jamaican dub and reggae sound that influenced jungle's bass-heavy sound. Another feature of the style is the complex syncopation of the drum tracks' breakbeat. AK1200
AK1200 is the stage name of Florida-based musician Dave Minner working in the jungle and drum and bass genres.' Career His first production effort was a 1993 remix of a Suburban Base Records track ''Somebody'' by Flex and Fats. AK1200 was also the first American DJ to play on U.K. pirate radio, alongside Swift and on Format FM alongside DJ Zinc. His debut album ''SHOOTTOKILL'' was co-produced with Rob Playford of ''Moving Shadow''. Hospital Records is a British independent record label based in South London. Primarily releasing drum and bass, the label was started in 1996 by Tony Colman (London Elektricity) and Chris Goss, and has grown in recent years to become one of the most well-known labels within UK dance music. The label has been home to artists such as Blame, Danny Byrd, Camo & Krooked, Logistics, Nu:Tone, Metrik, Fred V & Grafix, High Contrast and S.P.Y but also releases tracks from across the DnB genre. Tony Colman (born 28 April 1961), better known by his stage name London Elektricity, is an English electronic musician and the co-founder and CEO of Hospital Records. History The first incarnation of London Elektricity was the duo Tony Colman and Chris Goss. Founders and backbone of Hospital Records, they also pursued parallel projects under the monikers Peter Nice Trio and Dwarf Electro, but it was their tune "Song in the Key of Knife" under the guise London Elektricity that first gained them widespread recognition. Lincoln Barrett (born 18 September 1979), better known by the stage name High Contrast, is a Welsh electronic music producer, DJ and record producer. He produces drum and bass music, and his 2009 album ''Confidential'' reached BPI gold certification (100,000 units sold in the UK). Reid Speed (born Amy Margolis) is a multi-genre DJ who specializes in dubstep, drum and bass, trap, and electro. She owns and runs Play Me Records out of Santa Monica, California. Biography Music When Reid Speed began spinning records in 1996, she first generated curiosity as one of few female DJs at the time. A disc jockey, more commonly abbreviated as DJ, is a person who plays recorded music for an audience.
