Brazilians in France number approximately 153,700 and form the largest immigrant group from Latin America in France. Nearly half of them live in French Guiana, including many who have crossed the border illegally. History Background The ancestral origins of the Brazilian nation show recent ancestors of generations predominantly as Italians and Portuguese, but with strong African, Spanish, Japanese, German, British, French, Native American, Slavic and Semitic components, making most Brazilians able to join the European Union. However, they faced very different legal circumstances that Portugal and Italy had long before they joined the EU migration policy, thousands of people a day come to the consulates of Portugal to process the new nationality or obtain a visa; nevertheless, they are not the most numerous among Latin American immigrants in Europe. Maria Carlota "Lota" Costallat de Macedo Soares (16 March 1910 – 25 September 1967) was a well-connected Brazilian woman who became a well-known landscape designer and architect. Despite not having a degree in either area, she was invited by governor Carlos Lacerda to design and oversee the construction of Flamengo Park in Rio de Janeiro. Paulo Agenor do Rio Branco da Silva Paranhos (Paris, July 10, 1876 – Paris, February 17, 1927) was a French-born Brazilian rugby union player. He was the son of the Baron of Rio Branco and Marie Philomène Stevens (dancer of Belgian origin). He studied Medicine in Paris, where he settled, becoming a surgeon. He was the first Brazilian rugby union player of international level, and became a celebrity in France. He first played as a hooker, but later moved to fullback. Artur Avila
Artur Avila Cordeiro de Melo (born 29 June 1979) is a Brazilian and naturalized French mathematician working primarily in the fields of dynamical systems and spectral theory. He is one of the winners of the 2014 Fields Medal, being the first Latin American and lusophone to win such an award.
